Foreign service, the field force of a foreign office, comprising diplomatic and consular personnel engaged in representing the home government’s interests abroad and providing the necessary information on which foreign policy is based. Diplomatic and consular functions are generally performed by a single service, which is expected to serve at home or abroad, enabling interchangeability of consular and diplomatic officers. Prior to World War I, candidates for the British diplomatic service, for example, had to show that they had an independent income.

Main post office branches offer a variety of mail services. Post boxes can be found throughout cities, towns and villages in Britain. In more isolated areas, as well as in larger towns and cities, there are often small branches in newsagents, grocery stores and general information centres. In many villages, the post office is also the only shop. They may be either freestanding boxes or wall safes, but they are always painted bright red. Collections are usually made twice a day during weekdays (less often on Saturdays and Sundays). The last collection time of the day is marked on the box. Air letters go by Royal Mail’s airmail service anywhere in the world; the cost depends on the destination.

Beecroft was the British representative to Fernando Po, where the prevention squadron of the British Royal Navy was stationed. At the same time, the British scientists were interested in exploring the course and related settlements along the Niger River. Initial British attempts to open trade with the interior by way of the Niger could not overcome climate and diseases such as malaria. Local rulers continued to administer their territories, but consular authorities assumed jurisdiction for the equity courts established earlier by the foreign mercantile communities.
