His chosen theme was Survival and Justice in a Changing World. The Reith lectures set the agenda for much of his subsequent writings. It provided an opportunity to refine his thinking on the preservation of liberty in the face of great turbulence in international affairs and at a time when the world seemed to be at the mercy of dimly perceived forces such as overpopulation, pollution and scarcity of resources. He was foreshadowing the complex of issues later summed up as globalisation. Dahrendorf insisted that a new relationship had to be defined between government, the economy and society. His decade at the LSE proved mutually rewarding.
