  • Preface:
I had attempted to potty train my daughter at 20 months old. We tried the method where the child goes naked for three days. It was unsuccessful to say the least with up to 30 accidents per day. Shortly after she turned two, I tried again. This time, I brought her to the potty many times throughout the day and we would read books, etc. She could sit for up to an hour and not go but the second she stood up or got her diaper back on, she had an accident. At that point, after reading more online, I figured she must not be ready.

    Training:
Fast forward to 33 months old. I decided we needed a new method and was more determined than ever to potty train my daughter. After reading tons of reviews of all the different potty training books, I came across "Toilet Training in Less than a Day." Based on what others said, it sounded a lot different than the previous methods I had tried.

I agree with others that you have to read the book a few times (I even took notes). You will also need to gather the supplies listed.
Some notes about things I did differently from the book:

    1. The book recommends 10 "Practice Trials" for when the child has an accident. I did not do 10 (More like 5-6 max). The reason is, my daughter was visibly upset, crying and going limp. I would not push your child too far if they are really upset. They will get the idea.
    2. The example in the book is a boy, if you have a girl, you may want to add wiping to the training.
    3. The book does not teach hand-washing but you may wish to add this. Get a stool for the bathroom so your child can reach the sink. Your child may need assistance with this.
    4. The book says the child will complete all of the actions independently, but I found that not entirely true. My daughter needs help emptying the potty into the toilet because the toilet paper sticks to the bottom and if I'm not watching, she will stick her hand in it to get it out. She also could not flush the toilet alone, as it required more strength than she is capable.
    5. The book says that after the first day to only reward for dry pants (underwear). I continued to reward for both dry pants and using the potty. I added a sticker chart as well and that seemed to really help. (one for the chart and one for the child at each success).
    6. The book says if the child is older than 2.5 then they can wear underwear overnight. I disagree with that because many children do not yet have the ability to stay dry overnight. Plus, it seems ridiculous to correct a behavior that was done while the child was asleep. I told my daughter that only when she is sleeping she will wear "special sleepy time panties" (Pull-Ups).

All in all, I highly recommend this book and advise that parents make slight modifications as needed. My daughter is at Day 3, only two hours before bedtime and accident-free!

    UPDATE:

It has now been one month since the day we started training. A few days into the training, my daughter started holding in poop and refusing to go on the potty. I stopped doing the "Positive Practice Trails" after a couple days because it made her visibly upset and this is supposed to be a positive experience. Instead, I commented that she had an accident and told her that she is still learning and that someday she will go to the potty every time. Once I started doing that, my daughter improved significantly!

It took a lot for us to her poop-trained and she became very constipated so I began a high-fiber diet. We started watching videos on YouTube about children using the potty and that seemed to motivate her. I also created a "poop chart" with stickers and treats for successes. When the chart was filled up, we went to the children's museum as a reward. We continued using the "Friends Who Care List" often and especially when there was any resistance. I highly recommend calling family members that the child knows well so they can praise them!

After that, my daughter stayed dry during naps and overnight for a full week, so we no longer need the Pull-Ups and she is now 100% trained!

  • This book is a good read on potty training. It is a breath of fresh air from the current trend of late potty training. Earlier potty training isn't right for every family but it was right for us. Persistent diaper rash and power struggles on the changing table were our motivators. We modified the method to suit our needs. As stated, this method is not a gentle "wait and see if they're ready" method. It is for motivated parents who are not afraid to be the authority in their child's life.

Unfortunately for us our strong willed daughter fought us tooth and nail but was potty trained after a week. If you are the parent of a strong willed child this process will not be a day or two. If you know your child is stubborn set realistic expectations for yourself as you read.

Things from book that we used:
No diapers, panties from the start. Rewarding for dry pants and successful potties. POTTY DRILLS FOR ACCIDENTS. I cannot emphasize this enough. When you have a strong willed child and tell her to go potty she will throw the candy in your face and say NO. Our response was "ok. If you have an accident we will have to practice." after 5 days of potty drills (walking/dragging her multiple times from scene of accident to potty and making her help clean the mess) our stubborn daughter started taking initiative to potty on her own. This is the key to the Azrin method that stood out to us and worked. By day 7 we were mostly accident free. This process isn't fun but it works.

    Things we didn't use:
Our daughter was needlessly frustrated with getting her own panties on and off. She is 25 months and I help her every single potty trip. The book really emphasizes the importance of doing all the steps themselves but I don't think this is necessary for a younger toddler. It will come with time. We also did not tell our daughter to sit on potty. We used her strong will to our advantage and waited for her to tell us. She "decided" on her own that refusing to sit on potty wasn't worth having to run potty drills.

In conclusion, this book is a good read but be willing to be flexible. I started potty training trying to follow it to the letter but realized that things had to be modified for our daughter. We are currently diaper free and our daughter is so excited!

*Note: some feel that running potty drills is "shaming" your child. As long as one is calm and not berating their child, I would disagree. It is consistently showing them that a potty accident is not a desired thing to have. It is teaching them to take ownership in the accident and help clean up.These are life lessons not just potty lessons! Happy training.

  • Bottom line is it works. My wife did the potty training since she is the main caretaker when I am gone (book recommends that). You have to read it through and stick to the plan. You might feel a little silly during that first hour of acting it out with the doll, but stick with it. Have a plan, set a day aside, eliminate distractions and if all goes according to plan and with a little bit of luck your child (if ready based on the books criteria) will be using the toilet in a day. Took our son (just shy of three) less than 4 hours. A couple of accidents at night and a couple during the day over the next week, but much better than changing the old numbers 2 diapers. Read it through, follow the program. We did make one modification and use pull ups at night and while out in public. Researchers indicate that every child is different and there bladder capabilities and signals to the brain while sleeping are different as well. Our son will have a rare accident and regular underwear at night and plastic sheets just were not cutting it. Good luck! Worked for us. All the credit to the writers who applied Pavlov to potty training essentially, but more credit goes to my wife for getting it done in 4 hours.
