Here is one of the simplest flies to tie. It's a great fly to learn some basic techniques. It's as effective as the little black dress is. The Basic Black is the first fly to try from Richard W. Talleur's book called The Fly Tyer's Primer.

  • I used this book 25 years ago to improve my fly tying skills beyond those acquired in a 6 week beginners class. It worked! The writing is interesting and clear, the photographs and illustrations pertinent and useful. I still refer to this book when I have questions about certain flies or technique. In more recent years many fine instructional books and videos have appeared. I like many of them, but I still rate this the number one book. It was created when the written word still reigned supreme and photography was perfected for instructional purposes.

  • I have beeen flyfifhing and tying flies for over 50 years now. I am neither a great fly fisher or fly tier. I grew up in the Catskill Mts. With the Esopus being the waters that first humbled me . In my endless search to learn and grow about fly tying and fly fishing I have acquired an amazing number of books on both. I once read that more books have been written about fly fishing and it's various aspects than any other subject. My wife would say I have most of them.Amoung the very best instructional books for both the entry level tyer and many who may have forgotten some of the techniques that are the basis of successful and enjoyable fly tying is Tallrurs Mastering the Art of Fly Tying. Judging by the number of dog eared, coffee stained head cement stained pages I count myself amoung them
As more eloquently stated by another reviewer this a well written ,superbly organized book on fly tying with photo series that allow even a bone head like me to finially unlock the mysteryof the figure eight wrap .Each chapter builds on skills you learn from those preceding it. Chapter 7 alone is worth the price of admission. Talleur seamlessly links the development of variant type dry flies with thw work and writings of both Art Flick and Preston Jennings.this is just one exampel of the historical depth the book possesses .

This is a full sized hard cover book, which allows enough space for the photo sequences and the facing page narrative to be be with i eyes reach. Minimal page flipping as you dig in to follow the tying instructions.. An added bonus for those reading this in the 21st century is the chapter on Assessing the Essential Tools the review of and diagrams of the Thompson style vice, and selecting scissors are stil prove intresting and educational. The 18 page chapter on dry and wet fly hackle, their properties, use, and selection is in my thinking amoung the best ever written.
Grab this book .You won't be sorry .It was written 37 years ago, but is as instructive now as then., a beautiful blend of history, technique and art

  • The recently deceased Dick Talleur was a master fly tyer and fly tying instructor, and a terrific person. His
instructions are clear and concise and easy to master in this book, his first fly tying instruction book. The
reader should be capable of performing the basic steps in tying a fly. This book is an asset for any fly
    tyer's library.
