In 2003 an unlikely horse, from an unlikely stable owned by a group of high-school buddies won the Kentucky Derby and captured the hearts of America. I like horse racing, though I admit that I watch few races other than the Triple Crown ones. I was as caught up as anyone in Funny Cide’s Triple Crown saga, and as broken hearted when he was beat during that fin Book on CD read by Dan Cashman . .

They had no business being there. They were up against million-dollar horses owned by patricians, oilmen, Arab sheiks, and Hollywood producers. They were ten regular guys, and all they wanted was to win a race. Instead, they won the hearts of America. In 2003, a three-year-old with the unlikely name of Funny Cide became "the people's horse," the unheralded New York-bred gelding who-in a time of war and economic jitters-inspired a nation by knocking off the champions and their millionaire owners and sweeping to the brink of the Triple Crown.Trained by a journeyman who'd spent over 30 years looking for "the one," ridden by a jockey fighting to come back after years of injuries and hard knocks, and owned by a band of high school buddies from Sackets Harbor, N.Y., Funny Cide became a hero and media sensation. Now, Sally Jenkins, award-winning co-author of Lance Armstrong's #1 bestseller It's Not About the Bike, tells the inside story of the Funny Cide team's ups and downs against overwhelming odds, illness, and even scandal, to capture the imagination of millions. • This is decent feel-good story of a group of "regular guys" from a small upstate New York town who pooled their money and wound up with a Kentucky Derby winner. The horse also came very close to winning the Triple Crown, something that still hasn't been done in 30 years.

How it all happened is detailed here in the book. Some of this story will remind horse-racing fans of Laura Hillenbrand's tale of "Seabiscuit," at least in regards to the trainer. In here, Barclay Tagg is almost a dead-ringer for Tom Smith, the crabby old, secretive trainer of Seabiscuit. The stories about Tagg, I think, were the best parts of this book.

Since Funny Cide apparently did not have a long career, much of the book is about the owners, their background and their small town of Sackets Harbor. Those parts were so-so. I wanted to read more about the races but, overall, the book was still a fairly fast read and certainly brings back good memories of that 2003 racing season and all those folks coming to the Derby in an old yellow bus!

I do wish the author had said something more about Funny Cide's career or life after his big year. There is no mention of what has happened to him.

  • And, they're off!
This is the story of some down-to-earth middle class upstate New Yorkers who delved into the sport of horse racing for the sheer fun of it. Along the way they met breeders and trainers who loved horses above all else and an unremarkable horse who captured the imagination of the horse racing public. If you cheered for Secretariat, Seattle Slew, and Affirmed, you'll find yourself cheering for Funny Cide and thinking you'd look good in a yellow school bus.
    A must-read for racing fans.

  • Bought this book for my horse-loving 12 yr old neighbor, upon the recommendation of my 80 yr old friend.

  • Great book sbout a great horse and the people behind him that made him thst way. Funny in some places.

  • A favorite now and endearing. I am not a fan of non-fuction but this had humor, pathos and some excellent visual interpretations like them taking the school bus to a celebration. Its been several years since I read this but stays with me like no other.

  • Loved this book! So much humanity and satisfaction that the underdog won!

  • I chose this rating because I grew up at my first riding stable with the trainer
of Funnycide, Barclay Tagg. I had gotten the book before and my girl
friend wanted to read it, so it is such fun!

  • Awesome read! As a race fan and bettor thoroughly enjoyed reading the history of the horse trainer and race horse.
