  • Katy Mattingly has written an outstanding book for students and instructors. She has taken the time to become thoroughly educated about women's self-defense issues and has put together a clear, concise, and thorough guide to (1) the real-life risks women face; (2) barriers that keep women from practicing appropriate boundary-setting and other preventative behaviors; (3) awareness, verbal, and non-verbal skills to prevent assaults in the first place; and (4) proven physical defenses appropriate for a variety of situations that anyone can learn and use. Her book is impeccably researched, beautifully written, and carefully structured to provide many opportunities for personal reflection as well as physical mastery. I am so glad I've added this to my library!

  • Okay for someone who needs basic instruction by the numbers and is able to logically connect the sequences that might be lacking full depiction. Was expecting more. Would not consider using as a stand alone text for structuring a course, but okay for a general introduction and presenting a short set of techniques applicable to key threats women (and kids) might face.

  • I was lucky enough to have Katy as an instructor, and her book is a great guide to basic self-defense. I highly recommend it, particularly if, like me, you don't feel confident in your physical strength to protect yourself. It will change your life and make you immeasurably more confident!
