Hess's mixed martial arts debut came in the Ultimate Fighting Championship 5 tournament, where he defeated Andy Anderson by TKO at one minute twenty-two seconds into the fight.

On November 12, 1993, eight men met in Denver, Colorado, to decide who was the greatest fighter in the world. They fought one-against-one in an octagonal cage where they could punch, kick, knee, elbow, head butt and choke. "There are no rules!" proclaimed the organizers. The Ultimate Fighting Championship was born-and the mystique of traditional martial arts had died.

For thousands of years, the fighting arts had been shrouded in mystery and deceit. Secrets were jealously guarded, while blood-curdling claims were made of lethal techniques and even supernatural powers. Each style or system asserted that it was the best, its masters unbeatable.

By matching experts in different arts against each other, the Ultimate Fighting Championship exploded many of these myths. Black belts and flashy moves proved no match for the skill and technique of a new breed of athletic warrior.

In just over a decade, no-holds-barred fighting-otherwise known as mixed martial arts-has gone from a novelty spectacle to a worldwide sport. It has produced its own superstars like the Gracie family, Ken and Frank Shamrock, Maurice Smith and Randy Couture. It has also attracted massive condemnation from the media and run the gauntlet of police raids and banning orders. Its critics labeled it "human cockfighting." It was pursued from state to state, excoriated by campaigners and banned by politicians. Through it all, the sport has continued to thrive, spreading across the globe.

Author and journalist Clyde Gentry has interviewed more than 100 key figures to produce the definitive account of the world's most controversial and misunderstood sport and of the fighting men who dare to enter the octagon.

  • As a graduate student, I've come across a lot of "scholarly books" which, for the most part, establish the author as the sole authority in some particular field or subject area. Freud to psychoanalysis; C.S. Lewis to Christianity; Herb Kliebard to Education; Clyde Gentry to MMA...perhaps. Nonetheless, I think this book makes him the foremost authority on the history of MMA.

The book follows the rise of MMA, with great detail and with behind-the-scenes information. Each chapter is rich with detail and explanations on the various complexities of the world of MMA. This is a must read for any MMA fan.

  • Lots of details about the behind the scenes things that I found interesting. Have been following MMA since early days of UFC, live in Japan during mid '90's thru 2000's so was a big fan of Pride (and Dream) so was good to get the detail on some of the smaller upstart promotions that helped out the sport but quickly went under. It's a good, fun read.

  • I really enjoyed this book. I would like to see more on the history of MMA as far as Pankration, Olympics, and such. I love to hear more about fighters and their personal lives. I also enjoyed the history of the MMA organizations and their obstacles to put fights on. Pretty easy read with interesting facts. I recommend it as long as you don't pay over $15-$20 for the hard-back.

  • Its a book about fighting. There are some cool stories about the old days of no holds fighting and other things

  • Clyde does a fantastic job with No Holds Barred. I bought the newer edition in paperback and it has been an excellent read. He hold no punches in exposing all levels of the sport including behind the scenes politics, rivalries, challenges to traditional martial arts, and potentially "worked" matches in the sport as few as they are.

My only criticism is he was very in depth up until UFC Japan and then rushed through after that covering 20 or so UFC's in 15 pages or less. More behind the scenes about Pride would also be good. He might consider breaking into 2 Volumes at his next publishing to help with this...

All in all well done though Clyde. And this is coming from on of the forefathers in MMA information as I ran the very first Gracie Jiu-Jitsu training association website in 1995!!

    Thanks for an enlightening read...

  • If you are a fan of MMA (mixed martial arts) and want to know how the sport got to where it is today, you will find this book engrossing. When the sport first started, it faced legal and financial obstacles at every turn. Many legislators wanted to ban it as "human cockfighting." The early promoters had to deal with technical glitches, unpredictable (outside the cage) fighters, corrupt government officials, even crime syndicate interference. When you know more of the story, you have to admire the folks who persevered through all that to get the sport to where it is now. It is a story rich with interesting characters, grudges, betrayals, and also honor and some humor. The writing is clear. The amount of inside information is surprising. If you are interested in the business side of this sport, you will definitely enjoy this book.

  • It's a shame this book is out of print as it is well researchs and contained a great aggregation of facts of the early days of NHB. As a long time fan of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, I thought I knew everything there was to know about the subject. I was humbled in my knowledge as Clyde's behind the scenes knowledge rapidly broadened my perspective.

Well done, and get this back in print!

  • I can't tellyou how good a book this was to read. If you want to learn how MMA and, in particular, the UFC started and grew, this is for you.
Warning: if you have no interest in MMA before season 1 of TUF, stay away.
