He had worked one in that block-the white frame with the latticed porch farther down toward Madison Street-during the early part of March, and had got rather a nice bag. Then, warned off by the scare and hullabaloo that followed, he had fought shy of that part of town for a full month, confining his operations to one or two minor hauls in the Parkdale section.

like Rex Stout and I LOVE short stories. I enjoyed this book of short stories, even though the Rotund One is as absent as the mysterious military gent featured on the cover. The unchallenged star is the first story which features a competent, somewhat unorthodox professional burglar and a terrifyingly efficient young lady he encounters while plying his trade. The sexes battle, the mind feuds with emotions it can not control and crime extorts and strikes and kills but does not pay in this collection of stories ,
  • No mysteries here, but several good short stories. More "O'Henry" like rather than the familiar Wolfe tales. Interesting to see the development of what was to come and entertaining in their own right.

  • An original mind is at work - however most of the short stories are amusing and no more.

  • I am a huge Stout fan - have read all N.W books dozens of times, the Tecumseh Fox books several times, The Red Threads with Inspector Cramer, you name it. I finally ended up here, and it's pretty bad. I guess it's time to come to terms with the fact that a stout is dead and I won't be discovering any more of his work.

  • The sexes battle, the mind feuds with emotions it cannot control and crime exhorts and strikes and kills but it does not pay in this collection of sixteen short stories by Rex Stout at the outset of his celebrated career in mystery and suspense.

  • i have been a Rex Stout fan for years but found my interest waning in Archie Goodwin's sarcasm and Nero Wolfe's pettishness. So i tried 2 different books: Under the Andes which is AWFUL and htis book which was surprisingly DELIGHTFUL! Several short stories, carefully written, with a twist in each one. They have a hint of O. Henry's influence possibly? i would highly recommend it to anyone who likes short stories, surprise endings, or just simple stories of humanity.
