The Unquiet Heart" is the second in Gordon Ferris's Danny Macrae series, about a PI in post-war London. I was attracted to this series because of it's locale and time period, but UH didn't seem to quite match up to the first book in the series.

The Unquiet Heart" is the second in Gordon Ferris's Danny Macrae series, about a PI in post-war London. The opening scenes of a warehouse bust are, well a bust. Too improbable in many regards. Our hero, Danny, has been hired by newspaper reporter Eve, who soon disappears. Danny is requested by some Brit spooks to fetch her back from Berlin because he knows her best and might have better luck finding her than MI-6, the CIA etc.

Hi, Viv, it’s Danny McRae. Her heart wasn’t in it. Or maybe she was just plain scared and needed to know you were going to ride in on your white horse, Sir Galahad.

Hi, Viv, it’s Danny McRae. Are you doing anything on Saturday? Fancy the Palais? I bet you’re a great dancer. Certainly not! In that case, I’d like a word with your lord and master. I could almost see her cheeks sucking in as she fought for her dignity. They make sure they take an overdose just before their loved one comes home. Or they jump off a bridge into the river and find their arms making swimming motions involuntarily.

Danny McRae is a private detective scraping a living in ration-card London. Eve Copeland, crime reporter, is looking for new angles to save her career. It's an alliance made in heaven—until Eve disappears, a contact dies violently, and an old adversary presents McRae with some unpalatable truths. His desperate search for his lover draws him into a web of black marketeers, double agents, and assassins, and hurls him into the shattered remains of Berlin, where terrorism and espionage foreshadow the bleakness of the Cold War. And McRae begins to lose sight of the thin line between good and evil.

  • "The Unquiet Heart" is the second in Gordon Ferris's Danny Macrae series, about a PI in post-war London. I was attracted to this series because of it's locale and time period, but UH didn't seem to quite match up to the first book in the series. And now we have a spy story, and a murder/revenge story, and a post-Holocaust story, and a bit of Israel settlement history. The story moves quickly, has some interesting twists, but nevertheless feels predictable particularly the last third. So, at best this is a somewhat disappointing 3 star. Will I read the next one? Maybe not, but Ferris also has written another series about a Glasgow detective? reporter? that I may check out (same post WWll time period).

  • Danny McRae the damaged OSE veteran is part Marlowe, part Rebus and completely engrossing. This second book (his first,Truth Dare Kill was also a great read) to feature the down at heel PI paints a vivid but desperate picture of London and Berlin circa 1946. The mystery is uncomplicated, not a brain teasing whodunnit more of a thisiswhyitwasdun! Great new writer.

  • Fans of Philip Kerr's Bernie Gunther will enjoy Danny McRae in The Unique Heart. Tough private dick in London just after WW2. Similar attitude to authority as Bernie and some time in Berlin and of course a women. This is the first Gordon Ferris and I am now reading Truth Dare Kill (the first in the two part Danny McRae series). I enjoyed the writing style the characters and the story. A very good read.

  • I loved all of Gordon Ferris' post WWII suspense books but thought this one was the very best. The atmosphere was genuine and intense. Danny McCrae was more together. The plot was well thought out. I recommend the book highly.

  • I purchased 2 Ferris novels on the amazon recommendation for some Scottish Noir, it's British and post WWII which is an era I like but the characters aren't developed and it's just plain depressing.

  • Ihave enjoyed the Danny McCrae series.Believable and well researched. Just a real good read. Des T

  • The author gives the feel of the 1950's really well.
Danny McRae gets there after always looking to fail.
But, there's something about his character that makes you want more.

  • This was a pretty decent and well written thriller/ crime novel.

The setting is quite interesting and the author generally does a good job in portraying the post ww2 atmosphere. Occasionally some of the characters may have had a slightly too modern attitude but for the most part the book was pretty believable.

The author writes well and the main storyline was quite compelling. There are plenty of interesting characters and the hero of the book is particularly well drawn.

The action scenes were quite well handled and it all flowed together quite nicely. It succeeded in being a real page turner and as it is pretty cheap I would thoroughly recommend this.
