Gianrico began the publication of Guido Guerrieri series in 2002 when the Involuntary Witness the series debut novel was published. The series lasted four books concluding in 2010 when Temporary Imperfections was published. However, it is to be noted that Gianrico’s Guido Guerrieri series was originally written in Italian and later translated into English. In Gianrico Carofiglio’s Temporary Perfections, Italian lawyer Guido Guerrieri must find a friend’s daughter. Though Kingsley Amis once insisted that he wanted to read only books that began A shot rang out!, the renowned literary Brit might have made an exception for Gianrico Carofiglio.

Temporary Perfections - Gianrico Carofiglio. a weirdly San Franciscan venue, and my how well its noirness is invoked. Counselor Guerrieri, as the new translator calls him, is mid-flow on one of his usual if not terribly interesting workdays.

The electrifying best-selling crime thriller from Italy, available for the first time in English. An instant sensation and number-one best seller since its publication, Temporary Perfections is the fourth crime novel by former Italian prosecutor Gianrico Carofiglio to feature Guido Guerrieri. A lawyer practicing in Bari, in southwest Italy, Guido Guerrieri is hired by an old colleague to work a missing-persons case that the police have failed to solve. Manuela Ferraro disappeared six months ago after spending a September weekend at a beach resort; as Guerrieri digs deep into her life and activities, he stumbles into a sinister drug ring and the real truth about why Ferraro vanished. Simultaneously thoughtful and suspenseful, this is crime fiction at its best.
  • I love Gianrico Carofiglio, even though I keep forgetting his name between books. I'd gladly read forty of his novels in a row, if there were forty. This is only the fifth Carofiglio novel in English translation.

There are four books featuring Guido Guerrieri. A selective defense lawyer, Guido does not represent child molesters, rapists or Mafiosi - but rather white-collar criminals and small time independent operators in the underworld. Usually he keeps his clients out of jail.

In this novel a colleague asks Guido to look into a closed case. A young woman went missing six months before, and the Carabinieri were never able to trace her or uncover a crime. Manuela's parents are devastated. They want to know what happened. Perhaps Guido, with his deep judicial knowledge, may be able to find some detail in the files that was overlooked in the original investigation.

The plot revolves around Guido's unofficial inquiries. Although not qualified for detective work, Guido takes secret delight in this opportunity. Fictional sleuths inspire him.

Tantalizing developments arise, sandwiched in between amusing glimpses of Guido's everyday legal cases. But even better than the storyline are Guido's witty, self-deprecating internal monologues. He sees his own absurdities and calls himself on every lapse of sense, taste or grammar.

At age forty-five, Guido is a delightful combination of brainy and brawny. He's an ex-boxer who still works out. On the other hand, his head is full of characters from books and scenes from movies. He knows popular music, but also has Proustian moments. No mythic superhero, Guido hates fast driving and packs no guns. He's an ironical hero for sophisticated readers.

Authenticity is always nice, and Carofiglio's books definitely have it. The author is a former prosecutor in Bari, the scene of his novels. He knows the Italian courts and with wry good humor invites us inside.

I'd highly recommend the whole Guido Guerrieri series. In order: Involuntary Witness, A Walk in the Dark, Reasonable Doubts, and Temporary Perfections.

  • I have enjoyed all of the Guido Guerrieri novels and am so impressed by both the thoughtful, philosophical musings of the protagonist and the excellent translation that brings them so poignantly to the reader. A young girl, Manuela, is missing and her devastated parents are brought to Guerrieri by a friend of his, hoping that he will look into the investigation that was handled by the Carabinieri. Upon meeting the girl's parents, Guerrieri said of her father: "His gaze was vacant, his shoulders stooped, his clothes hanging off his frame. When I shook hands with him, I felt as if I'd picked up an unhappy invertebrate creature." The mother he described as having "something unhealthy about her gaze, the aftermath of an injury to her soul." Though he is not a detective, Guerrieri can not resist helping these people.

Guerrieri is a thoughtful, intelligent man, a former boxer who still works out and a man looking for the right woman. The book was well plotted, flowed easily and was difficult to put down. I consider this series to be on a par with Donna Leon's Guido Brunetti and Andrea Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano series.

  • There seem to be many valid complaints about the structure of this novel but it is as if each reviewer picked out one or two deficiencies that struck him as worthy of note. Each though is qualified enough so that it does not merit a condemnation of the book. I can agree with the complaint that it would have been more rewarding if the reader had read the series in order of publication, especially when the author references Guerrieri's past relationship with Margarita or his first wife.

I find that the author does not seem to have made up his mind as to whether or not Guerrieri is acting as a lawyer or a detective. Finally there is the problem with plot and structure as it seems that many sections of the book explaining Guerrieri's actions, his past, his philosophical musings, even his personal likes and dislikes about everything from pop music to tasseled shoes while interesting and amusing could have been incorporated into the themes of the book in a more seamless pattern.

That being said, there are more positive points that can recommend this book to his fans The biggest plus is the absolute realistic portrayals of all his characters even the minor ones and a lack of theatrics. By this I mean there is a steady and logical progression in the plot without a dramatic denouement at the end. If I had had my druthers, I would have omitted the reference to Arthur Conan Doyle and the spark that it ignited in solving the mystery.

So this is a fine book but perhaps should not be the first in the series that you read.

  • This is the work of an author at his peak. Carofiglio wrote a number of books both in this series and outside of it and all have been well worth reading. Some emphasized the human side of the crimes at the center of his books and some might be called legal thrillers. He writes good legal thrillers and great Italian noir. In this book, he returns to his serial character, the lovable Guerrieri. This is not your usual character to hang a story on. He is a complex, developing person with whom it is hard not to be empathetic. The plot is based on attorney Guerrieri being asked by a wealthy couple to locate their missing adult daughter. Since he is an attorney, he wonders why he has been selected. They say because of his discretion and pay him an oversized retainer. Not to give the plot away, the investigation carries Guerrieri into a circle of Italian young adults that sucks him in lock, stock and soul. This is also a beautifully written book. The feel of Italy matches the admirable Camilieri, but the characters are Chandler at this best. This is one that is not to missed.
