Well-known actress Caroline Fawley has given up her successful stage and television career for love and life at Alderley, an elegant country home ""bought"" for her by her married ""friend,"" international business titan Marius Fleetwood. Despite the inquisitive villagers, Caroline is happy and the world is good...until a mysterious young man backpacking through the countryside arrives at the door. He says his name is Peter Bagshaw, but Caroline can't help noticing his physical resemblance to Marius. Is he Marius' son? What else has Marius hidden from Caroline?Who is Marius anywayIs everything about him a lie? Then a murder occurs....As always in a Barnard mystery, the fun is in the details, the characters, the twists. With big houses, wealth, opera, and obsessive devotion among the ingredients, Barnard has cooked up another witty, richly nuanced novel worthy of the crime-writing star that he is.
  • I loved the main character in this book, Caroline Fawley. She's the mistress of the elegant country home Alderley. She's also the mistress of a supermarket tycoon, who's set her up in this lovely estate. Having been a successful actress for all too many years, she's enjoying the peace and quiet of being a kept woman. And the village accepts her, even the rector and his wife, or she imagines they do.

Caroline has played many lady-of-the-manor roles in forgettable drawing-room comedies, and now she's playing the part to perfection in real life.

Caroline is under quite a few illusions, but she has a good heart. I admired her joie de vivre, her originality and her style. Her conversation is witty and unconventional. Her tolerance of irregular behavior comes from long association with theater people – but it's seriously challenged when murder enters the picture.

Caroline's teenage children are charming, with their astute understanding of their mother's character. And there are some fun types among the villagers, like the farting baronet and his belligerent, racist sister.

Detective Sergeant Charlie Peace runs into racism a lot, being black, and his way of dealing with it is quite interesting.

The Mistress of Alderly combines the novel of manners with the classic British whodunit. I find Robert Barnard's books utterly irresistible when he accomplishes this.

  • This was a fairly good story line, but it didn't hold my interest, and I was tempted to put it down half way through the book. Too much emphasis on the sexual drives of the characters.

  • Perfect author/book for those who love real English cozies--he's a real English author. If you love Agatha Christie, you'll love his books.

  • Robert Barnard does not disappoint in this well characterized and plotted book. It's always fun to read him and this was a good example of his work.

His fascination with the pure detective story is evident in his many novels.

Caroline Fawley, has a good life. The romantic weekend visits from her boyfriend, the supermarket heir Marius Fleetwood, give the local all the gossip they need to keep them going through the week.

But Caroline's life is turned upside down when a young man who looks remarkably si9milar to Marius turns up on her doorstep unannounced. Within a few weeks Marius has gone missing and it is not long before a body is found . . .
