The book's success led to his becoming the racing correspondent for London's Sunday Express newspaper, and he continued in that job for 16 years. Richard Stanley Francis was a British crime writer. During the Second World War, Francis volunteered, hoping to join the cavalry. Instead, he served in the Royal Air Force, working as ground crew and later piloting fighter and bomber aircraft, including the Spitfire and Hurricane fighters, and the Wellington and Lancaster bombers.
In the main, Dick Francis books are an enjoyable read, follow a bit of a pattern but on the whole provide an entertaining few hours without stretching the brain too much, a restful read. This however was not a front runner, a bit below par, plot seemed a bit far fetched and left me feeling puzzled at the unsatisfactory ending.
