  • Last Seen Alive is much like other of the Inspector Thanet stories I have read. The inspector and his subordinate are nice guys to spend some time with and the stories move along at a steady pace. In my mind I always link Ms. Simpson's books with the CD. Sloan series written by Catherine Aird. They are also police procedurals, written in a quiet style with the emphasis on personalities and logic rather than gore and graphic violence. However, the Thanet series lacks the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) wit of Ms. Aird's books and there isn't the humorous tension that exists between Sloan and Detective Constable Crosby. Inspector Thanet's partner always has a problem to solve and the older, wiser Thanet always has the perfect advice to help solve it. That scenario gets old quickly. In fact, I can't recall the plot of Last Seen Alive, only the personal problem solved. I think both of these authors have died, or at least quit writing quite some time ago, but I will probably pick up any unread installments I can find and read them. I recommend them if you enjoy the style but if you want a lot of excitement, violence and romance you will be disappointed.

  • This is the third Thanet I've read. It won the Silver Dagger, but I conclude the prize was given for the author's consistent qualities rather than because this novel stands out. There's a good plot, credibly investigated, solved by a reasonable mix of intelligence and good luck. We see enough of the detectives' private lives to make them real people, complicated by credible personal stresses. But the mystery is always the main focus. And the writing is always excellent.

  • I know not all families are nice but then not all families are horrible either. Thanet has a loving relationship with wife and children. I like the cerebral stories, not violent and psychologically insane people. I firmly agree with Thanet's last opinion on telling the secret. Only fair to the woman.

  • This is a page turner of a book. Those who enjoy romantic suspense with paranormal overtones will love it. It is hugely entertaining. Having read many of this West Virginian author's books, she never fails to deliver. This book is no exception.

Dr. Chyna Greer was just sixteen when tragedy struck. Her best friend, Zoey, went to meet a secret heartthrob one night by the lake, despite Chyna's exhortations to the contrary. Unfortunately, it was a tryst from which Zoey was never to return. She simply seemed to have vanished into thin air.

Twelve Years later, when Chyna returns to make arrangements for her mother, who met with an untimely death, she finds herself besieged by memories of Zoey and by what seems to be messages from Zoey from beyond the pale. Thus, Chyna becomes aware that Zoey was just one of a number of teenage girls from her hometown, who were abducted and killed.

Chyna's extra sensory perception, which she has always looked upon as a curse, is the one tool that will enable to unlock the secrets that will reveal just who is responsible for the evil that has blanketed her home town. The only question is whether she herself will be able to survive it.

  • I like Inspector Thanet and his partner. This should be a good series. The ending was weak to me. I couldn't tell if their conclusion to the murder was right or not. I thought Rain's confession was true or not. Several other characters could have been the murderer and Rain was protecting family.

  • Absolutely love her writing style. She clear, concise, and does a great job of developing the characters. She weaves in her counselinxxbackground with interactions between characters, particularly family members. Good, clean, well writtten mystery. I will definitely read her other books.

  • An intriguing story. I am enjoying this series very much. I like the British procedural mysteries. The characters are well developed and I enjoy the twists and turns. I will continue to read the rest of the series.

  • This is #5 in the English detective, Inspector Luke Thanet mystery series published in 1985. First one in the series that I have read and I enjoyed it! There's good character development and you get to know Thanet's wife and children. Mystery surrounds one of his children's friends and we get introduced to the dangers of...don't want to give that away. There's a murder to solve along with misleading evidence.
