Lillian O'Donnell (March 15, 1926 – April 2, 2005) was an American crime novelist notable for being one of the first to introduce a female police officer as the lead character in a book series. She was born in Trieste, Italy but spent most of her life in New York. She studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, New York and her first career was in the theatre - as an actress on stage and television and as first female stage manager on Broadway.

A crime hits too close to home in veteran police proceduralist Lillian O'Donnell's highly praised Norah Mulcahaney series. An engrossing series. O'Donnell presents ethical quandaries in addition to the dilemmas commonly found in the ordinary whodunit. The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Lillian O'Donnell is a New Yorker; she grew up in the city, where she attended parochial and public schools, pursued a career in the theater, married, and continues to live in the city. With a minor role in Pal Joey, O'Donnell became involved in Broadway productions as an actress and dancer. O'Donnell's early mystery stories reflect a gothic dimension in exotic settings, country estate motifs, and genteel characters. Death Schuss (1963), for example, takes place in Canada at the height of the ski season amid the luxurious environs of an heiress's home.

Ms. O'Donnell's too-too-stolid style is clearly never going to melt, but it's refreshing to see Norah playing cop, instead of paragon, and stooping to such base human emotions as jealousy. Fred Carver, an Orlando private eye who normally thrives in soaring temperatures, takes on a dull surveillance job for a retired cop named Henry Tiller who lives on Key Montaigne ("condos, condos, condos, and a couple of retirement communities"), where he keeps an eye peeled on the neighbors.
