The book might be weaker that usual in terms of descriptions, nature, etc. Probably Gardner should have hired George . Martin to write these, but I am afraid in this case the book would still being written. In the mystery department it was great and quite of the level with the other ones of the series. A lot of the Mason books before this have Mason solving the case during the course of cross-examining a witness and this was no different. The other common element is a load of other clues and secrets that divert attention from the real killer. All in all, a a decent mystery if a bit predictable.

  • I am reliving a part of my childhood by re-acquiring the Perry Mason series. My Dad would receive an edition every month in the mail. When he finished with it, it was my turn. I devoured the books.

  • The Case of the Reluctant Model

The 'Foreword' is dedicated to Judge James M. Carter of the US District Court in San Diego, an outstanding humanitarian. Judge Carter referred a case to Erle Stanley Gardner, who referred it to medical examiners. There was a mistaken assumption on the part of the pathologist who never saw the victim of a drunken quarrel who had probably died a natural death.

Art dealer Lattimer Rankin visits Perry Mason, and wants to sue a rival for slander because the rival hinted the art dealer sold an imitation. Perry explains why this would be a mistake; instead let the owner of this picture sue for disparaging its value. This chapter explains how a suit is useful for publicity. Chapter 2 explains why you should be careful in making comments in public (even if you won't be sued in court). Perry and Della attend the press conference on Otto Olney's yacht (he bought the painting in question). Afterwards they have dinner and dance the Twist (Chapter 4). They are approached by Collin Durant, the art dealer said to have questioned the authenticity of Olney's painting, but shoo him away. But something about this doesn't seem right to Perry (Chapter 5).

Maxine Lindsay, the witness in the suit, calls Perry to tell him that she has to leave on an urgent personal matter. Maxine gives Della a key to her apartment so her canary can be fed. When Perry and Della show up at her apartment the next morning, they find a dead body but no canary! Perry finds where Maxine went, and meets her to talk, just before Lt. Tragg arrives to question her. The murder weapon was owned by Maxine. Paul Drake discovers that Collin Durant ran up big bills at an art supply shop - for an artist who was a talented copyist. One of the copies was of that disputed painting. The mystery is where Durant got his thousands in one-hundred dollar bills. Only a bank would have this denomination.

Chapter 14 begins the preliminary hearing of the State of California versus Maxine Lindsay. The ballistics expert testifies that Maxine's revolver fired the fatal shots. In Chapter 16 Perry Mason elicits important information from a resident at Maxine's apartment house: she only saw someone wearing a baggy tweed coat from the back. Perry Mason takes a calculated risk: he calls the defendant to the witness stand. Maxine tells what happened that night: Durant came over about 6pm and told her to get out of town fast, and she did so because he had some hold on her. Perry Mason now has a bombshell to explode on the prosecution's case (time of use of the locker). But now a witness comes to visit Perry Mason. This talk leads to new evidence and the solution of the crime. Perry's defendant is cleared. [But the ending seems a little forced to me.]

  • The Case of the Bigamous Spouse

The 'Foreword' is dedicated to Mitsuo Yokoyama M.D., Ph.D., and the other Japanese hematologists who are at the forefront of research. They can "classify approximately forty blood group systems, seventy blood group factors, and more than 100,000,000,000 theoretically genotypes".

Gwynn Elston visits Perry Mason because she thinks her best friend's husband tried to poison her! Gwynn has been staying with Nell and Felting Grimes while she works selling books to families. One customer had a picture of her husband, who looked like Felting Grimes. That night Felting started asking her questions about her work. Later Gwynn tasted something bitter in the drink Felting gave her. Tonight Gwynn must return for her business meeting. Perry tells her what to do for her safety (Chapter 2). Later Gwynn calls to report that nothing happened (Chapter 3). The next day Gwynn tells of the strange event that happened, and how she was given a pistol (Chapter 4)! When she went to revisit that location, she found Felting Grimes dead, and that delayed her return to Perry. Perry Mason telephones Lt. Tragg to report the dead body. Lt. Tragg's quick actions finds the likely suspect (Chapter 6). Perry warns Gwynn to say nothing while in custody until Perry can find out about the situation.

Perry and Della go to visit Nell Grimes, Felting is away on business. Nell knows little about her husband's business. But news on the radio tells the police found a body and identified it. Perry's interview is quickly ended. Perry visits the murder scene to watch the police find a pistol. Gwynn's story about giving a strange man a lift is verified. If the father of Felting Grimes died the day before would that be just a coincidence?

Perry and Della visit the mountain town to inquire about Gorman Gillet, recently deceased (Chapter 10). Perry took fingerprints, and got a hit from the FBI. Now a new person could be a suspect (Chapter 11). Perry is able to get his fingerprints, but they do not match a known person. There are other complications and difficulties for Perry. Gwynn is in trouble as she started talking to the police without her lawyer. The missing witness shows up, confirms Gwynn's story, but can implicate her.

The Preliminary Hearing looks bad for Gwynn until Perry examines a hostile witness; the testimony reveals surprising facts that cast doubt about the prosecution's case. A prosecution witness is recalled and the mystery is solved in Chapter 15. [There is no comment on the unconventional household of the Grimes. Some items of everyday life then are noticeably out of date. Note the plug for the magazine that paid well for Gardner's stories.]
