Liz Jensen: Seeing The Ninth Life of Louis Drax on screen is like meeting an eerie stranger. Loved this my third book by Liz Jensen and one that's been on my shelf ages (why?) Couldn't put it down, loved the style of writing and the characters including little Louis. You could see where it was going but it was still a great story.

Nine-year-old Louis Drax, disturbed and accident-prone from birth, wanders away from a picnic site in the Auvergne. It's an idyllic spot, scented with wild thyme and made sleepy by the roar of the river in the local ravine, into which Louis falls and is washed up almost dead. Comatose and puzzling, he exists in the puckers and fissures of the French medical system, and, more importantly, of his own injured brain, "hovering between four and five on the Glasgow Coma Scale".

The Ninth Life of Louis Drax packs an irresistibly twisted wallop. Liz Jensen's critically acclaimed fiction spans numerous genres. Her most recent novel is The Uninvited. Jensen splits her time between London and Copenhagen.

Louis miraculously survives – but the family has been shattered. Louis' father has vanished, his mother is paralysed by shock, and Louis lies in a deep coma from which he may never emerge. In a clinic in Provence, Dr Pascal Dannachet tries to coax Louis back to consciousness. But the boy defies medical logic, startling Dannachet out of his safe preconceptions, and drawing him inexorably into the dark heart of Louis' buried world. Only Louis holds the key to the mystery surrounding his fall – and he can't communicate. Or can he? Thriller & Crime Fiction.

Stuff happens to me that shouldn’t happen, like going on a picnic where you drown. Just ask my maman what it’s like being the mother of an accident-prone boy and she’ll tell. No fun. You can’t sleep, wondering where it’s going to end. You see danger everywhere and you think, Got to protect him, got to protect him. But sometimes you can’t. Maman hated me before she loved me because of the first accident. The first accident was being born. It happened the same way as the emperor Julius Caesar. They stab the lady with a knife till her belly pops, and then they.

In Brief Nine-year-old Louis Drax lies in a coma in a hospital bed, re-living the events that led to his near-fatal fall into a ravine. Despite being attracted to the boy's mother Natalie Drax, Louis' doctor, Pascal Dannachet, begins reluctantly to question her version of Louis' accident and the apparent culpability of her missing husband. In Detail In this taut psychological thriller Liz Jensen explores the many ways in which people can manipulate one another, from perverting the close bonds of a mother-son relationship to the exploitation of pity and sexual attraction. Louis is a deeply disturbed child to whom violence is commonplace.

Nine-year-old Louis Drax is so accident prone that he should be dead nine times over! He has continued to baffle doctors and scientists with his unfailing will to live, despite the accidents and mishaps that have plagued his young life. The story commences upon his ninth chance at life. During a family picnic, Louis falls down a cliff face and is submerged into a coma. The accident, which is shrouded in mystery, plagues his emotionally traumatised mother and the coma specialist, Dr Pascal Dannachet, who are attempting to coax him back to the land of the living.

Nine-year-old Louis Drax is a problem child: bright, precocious, deceitful, and dangerously, disturbingly, accident prone. When he falls off a cliff into a ravine, the accident seems almost predestined. The boy miraculously survives - but the family has been shattered. Louis' father has vanished, his mother is paralysed by shock, and Louis lies in a deep coma from which he may never emerge. In a clinic in Provence, Dr Pascal Dannachet tries to coax Louis back to consciousness. But the boy defies medical logic, startling Pascal Dannachet out of his safe preconceptions, and drawing him inexorably into the dark heart of Louis' buried world. Only Louis holds the key to the mystery surrounding his fall - and he can't communicate. Or can he? The Ninth Life of Louis Drax is about what the human heart can inflict, and the mind endure. Shocking, poignant, heartbreaking, this is Liz Jensen's break out novel. Destined for acclaim and prizes.
  • Good, interesting and engaging writing with fascinating perspectives (as in "Girl On the Train"). Quite predictable though which takes away a bit from the "mystery" element. The worst aspect for me was the willing suspension of disbelief required - which the author herself appears to acknowledge. Nevertheless, it remains a very interesting and engaging read.

  • This is not my usual kind of book, but I saw a movie trailer and was intrigued. I didn't love the way it was written but there were parts of the story that grabbed me and forced me to keep reading. It's an interesting premise, but not believable. This story is a combination of science fiction and psychological thriller.

  • I bought this book after watching the movie of the same name. The book is much, much better than the movie. The characters are complex and interesting, and the writing style very accessible.

  • Sometimes you come upon a book that just takes you completely by surprise.
This is one. I can truly say that I loved it and would strongly recommend it.

  • I've read three of Liz Jensen's novels, and each one is a thing unto itself -- her ideas are completely original, and she never relies on predictable tropes or patterns. Louis Drax is a nine-year-old boy whose complex relationship with his mother unwinds in startling ways throughout the course of this book. In some ways it could be considered a whodunit, because Louis lies in a coma from its opening pages, and the reader desperately wants to know exactly how he got there. That question is answered by the end of the book, but along the way the reader is privileged to see deep inside this strange boy's most private thoughts, fears, and colossal and consequential misunderstandings of overheard adult conversations. The narrator is a doctor in a clinic for coma patients where Louis is sent for treatment. He begins as an objective observer, but is quickly swept up into the drama surrounding Louis and his mother. The doctor's gradual loss of perspective and his culpability in the novel's events are two of its most compelling aspects. If this is your first Liz Jensen read, I strongly encourage you to stick with her, regardless of whether you admire or dislike Louis Drax. Her other novels are different enough for the reader to feel that s/he's encountering another writer altogether.

  • I was not a fan. It seemed a little darker than I would like for my 12 year old. Something about it was just not my type.

  • The book moves very quickly. I enjoyed the movie, but the ending in the book is much better. The movie is worth seeing, but also read the book.

  • I read this because I saw the movie was coming out. It's not what I was expecting but still good. I wish they had translated all the French words (books titles and what not).
