AN UPTOWN HIGH-RISEA glittering Manhattan sliver building. I've read most of Ira Levin's books (Rosemary's Baby, A Kiss Before Dying, Stepford Wives, The Boys From Brazil) and have really enjoyed them. He's a master of saying a lot without using many words, of building tension through innocuous events and of writing strong female characters who live in situations where female strength isn't encouraged.

A man watches her. He watches her unpack, watches her make her bed. He owns the building: a shocking secret is concealed within the walls. Sliver is a sinuous, erotic thriller that explores the menacing evil behind the glittering facade of Manhattan's skyscrapers; a hypnotic story of obsession and the temptation of ultimate power.

Kay Norris, a successful single woman of thirty-nine, moves into the posh Carnegie Hill district of Manhattan's Upper East Side, into an apartment in a slender high rise, a "sliver" building. A man watches her. He watches her unpack, watches her make her bed. He owns the building; a shocking secret is concealed within its brick and concrete. Sliver is a novel about ultimate power, and the temptations the use of that power brings. With ice cold precision, Levin, the author of Rosemary's Baby and The Stepford Wives, creates a mesmerizing story that culminates in a scene of electrifying suspense.
  • Basic knowledge, no pinpointed answers.

  • Fantastic read.

  • Ira Levin wrote a half dozen novels which were adapted to films, Sliver being no exception. He is a master writer and his novels have a consistent high quality of craftsmanship. The narration is seemless with no identification and the view is detached and observational in nature. The suspense builds to aclimax. This novel is about a landlord who has all the apartments in his building wired with hidden cameras which he uses to spy on his tenants. It is very timely considering the current epidemic of cyberstalking we have at present.

  • I'd seen the movie with Sharon Stone and Stephen Baldwin years ago, but since Ira Levin is such a gifted writer, I wanted to read the book, as well. It's a spine-tingler, that's for certain, and with the additional detail a book provides over a movie, it's even creepier than the film!

  • Part of Ira Levin's problem is he has to compete with himself. "A Kiss Before Dying" was an exceptional work and everything else gets compared to it. I still thought this was a good book which moved quickly and kept my attention. Use of an apartment building built explicitly for voyeurism was a little far-fetched, but not enough to ruin the book for me. The cat and mouse between the voyeur and gradual realization/exposure by one of his targets was done well. The biggest flaw for me was a somewhat absurd ending, which could have been accomplished in a much more believable way.

  • I love Ira Levin! Another classic, and sexy novel! Make sure you set aside enough time to read it in one sitting!

  • Great story that's hyper focused on a high-rise apartment complex. Themes of the book are privacy, sex and ethics. The ending has poetic justice.
