  • Iinteresting story with a surprising ending.

  • For horsemen, particularly those that remember the Arabian horse market boom in the 1980's, this book is a worthwhile read. I'm sad for the author that she did not have this book properly edited. It has so much potential but the typos, grammatical errors, and formatting challenges are many and very distracting.

  • The Arabian Horse "industry" of the 1980's is an interesting topic - ripe for a full-blown 'expose' similar to Auerbach's excellent book on the rise and fall of Calumet Farm "A Wild Ride". However, "Trading Paper" and the other two books by Cali Canberra don't fill the bill. The writing style is atrocious - an English/journalism teacher could easily use these books as an example of "Don't Let This Happen To You!" (and don't blame the publisher for not providing an editor - I believe these books were self-published by the author).
The book is purported to be fiction based on fact, but what it turns out to be (easy enough to figure out for anyone who followed the Arabian Horse industry at the time) is a thinly veiled story based on 'gurus' and celebrities of the Arabian horse world at the time - she just changed their names ever so slightly.
Like I said, interesting topic (which is why I'm giving it two stars) but due to the writing, a VERY painful book to read. And "Never Enough" is worse still.

  • Trading Paper is a really fun and entertaining story that has been thoroughly enjoyed by thousands of people. I know for a fact that thousands and thousands of people have not only read, but loved Trading Paper (and didn't get hung up on a few typos and grammatical snafus')...it's raw, a little rough around the edges, real...and I think a lot of people actually love that about this book.

How do I know all of this? Because I was there and saw it firsthand and lived it alongside Cali, I'm her husband.

I watched as people would line up at book signings held at the nation's biggest horse shows & equine events to meet Cali Canberra because they had read and loved Trading Paper so much and wanted to buy Buying Time or Never Enough! Or they'd want to buy a bunch of copies of Trading Paper, because they wanted all of their friends to read it too. Cali would hear, "I loved Trading Paper" all day long, over and over again, unsolicited, from fans of a self published novel which rarely made it onto the shelves in conventional book stores, but still sold over 13,000 copies of the trade paperback version. Call me crazy, but to me, that was the best review any book could have ever received.

So, here I am, an extremely biased party...so don't take my word for it. You can listen to the facts of what thousands of people think or buy into a couple of Amazon reviews whining about typos and grammatical errors (which, by the third printing were pretty much eliminated anyway).
