Alan Murphy took off for a six month stint around Europe and the Middle East after finishing a degree in Business Studies in 1992 in Western Australia. Four years later and after plenty of business-related temp work (that he found as exciting as long-distance bus journeys) he was back on home soil. He returned to studies in 1997 looking for a way to combine travel, writing and self-employment.

  • If you are going to take a trip to another country, I Highly recommend using the Lonely Planet as your guide. These Books are always well organized and easy to read. The Guide books always include information on the best sights They have hotel choices for every budget. I have been to 32 countries and every continent except Antarctica. I always use the Lonely Planet for practical information. They always include a section of "Dangers and Annoyances" which can help make your trip more enjoyable.

  • Even thought I am going with a tour company, this book was extremely valuable mainly for the history of places I will visit, and for giving more than enough info about each place. I don't use the hotel sections since I am going on an all inclusive tour so can't speak to those issues.

  • Great book. Has a little of everything. Give an explanation about every city. Good to have if your going to travel in South Africa.

  • Best travel book ever.

  • This book is little more than a list of tourist destinations in Southern Africa. Budget accomodation is limited and information about the places listed is non-existant. Everything in this book could be found out with a few quick google searches. Save your money.
