Lin Yutang had a similar study-abroad experience in the early twentieth century, and I feel affinity with his feelings towards his motherland expressed in this book one hundred years I very rarely thought about the special quality of China and its people until I came to US for college, and it is in a foreign country (a special country that seems to. be dominating the world and replacing all local cultures with its own) that I gradually started to rediscover the essence of my country and my people. It was widely translated and for years was regarded as a standard text on China.

Yutang Lin. Read Books, 1 нояб. MY COUNTRY AND MY PEOPLEby LIN YUTANGINTRODUCTION In this atmosphere of change, the present intellectual youth of China has grown up. Where the fathers imbibed the doctrine of Confucius and learned the classics and revolted against them, these young people have been battered by many forces of the new times. They have been taught something of science, something of Christianity, something of atheism, something of free love, something of communism, something of Western philosophy, something of modern militarism, something, in fact, of everything.

Lin Yutang (Chinese: 林語堂; pinyin: Lín Yǔtáng; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: lîm gú-tông ; October 10, 1895 – March 26, 1976) was a Chinese inventor, linguist, novelist, philosopher, and translator. His informal but polished style in both Chinese and English made him one of the most influential writers of his generation, and his compilations and translations of classic Chinese texts into English were bestsellers in the West.

  • I was not familiar with Lin Yu Tang until I read another book that referred to him.
China is a terrifically complex country with an astounding history, but Lin was able to define, explain, and shape this
country's past in an entirely robust and comprehensible manner. His understanding of European culture, religions and literature
was most impressive. He changed my view of China and its people

  • I feel like it is not the genuine book with proper copy right. The cover of the book has blurred image. Inside, the paper is very thin with a little blurred print letters.

  • The book is good the printing is terrible. At the edge of many page, letters were missing. The company should not be allowed in the publishing business.

  • great

  • I'm a Chinese American fluent in both Chinese and English and I think Mr. Lin did a phenomenal job of explaining the Chinese people and its culture to a Western audience in a very humorous way. I chuckled many times at all the contradictions he pointed out about the Chinese mind and even learned why sometimes my people act the way they do. I've bantered about to friends on the tyranny of family in the Chinese life. But Mr. Lin explained to me why and what that is and its consequences. A great read. One complaint: Mr. Lin tended to throw out names of historical and contemporary figures alike without fully explaining who they are. I was able to guess correctly half of them because of my heritage. But I think most Westerner would find this frustrating because they may be altogether puzzled at who is and why is this person cited.

  • Not easy to read. English is off tangent!

  • This is a good book for the people who are interested in knowing China. But the quanity of print is very bad. not recommend to buy this version.

  • liked his love of china
