He is considered one of the great Scottish poets of the 20th century. George Mackay Brown was born on 17 October 1921, the youngest of six children. His parents were John Brown, a tailor and postman, and Mhairi Mackay, who had been brought up in Braal, a hamlet near Strathy, Sutherland as a native Gaelic speaker.

George Mackay Brown was born in Stromness, Orkney, on 17 October 1921. He was educated at Stromness Academy, Newbattle Abbey College (1951-52) and Edinburgh University, from which he graduated MA in 1960. After graduation he began teacher training but ill health forced him to give up and he returned to Orkney and to Stromness (the ‘Hamnavoe’ of his poems and stories).

The Collected Poems of George Mackay Brown. I recently visited Orkney Island and noticed a lot of references to George Mackay Brown. His poetry was everywhere - even etched into the window of the ferry boat waiting room. Loved this book - wish I had read it before my visit instead of afterwards.

Gunnie Moberg was a photographer of down-to-earth authenticity. Her work began in photojournalism, almost by accident, but extended to book projects, notably with the poet George Mackay Brown, who became a good friend, and exhibitions not only in Scotland but also in her native Scandinavia. She was dence for the St Magnus Festival in Orkney from its beginnings in 1977 and close to its founders Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Archie Bevan. She made the Northern Isles pictorially her own in a trio of guides with the Norwegian writer Liv Kjørsvik Schei.
