  • This book is perfect for planning backpacking trips in California! All trails include details about what to expect. This includes: miles, recommended days, elevation gain/loss, type of trip, difficulty, solitude, location, maps, and best seasons. This takes the guess work out of trying to find a place to hike and then searching the internet for others who have done the hike and finding out which route they took, how many days/nights they spent out on the trail, etc. Definitely recommend this to all hikers, whether just starting out or seasoned backpackers.

  • My purpose for getting this book was that I was tired of scanning through multiple websites and blogsites just to find my next backpacking trip. Maybe I never found the goldmine online resource but I was looking for a clear cut reference of backpacking trips that I could take in California with very explicit guide directions and pictures. This book perfectly solves my problem. Very easy to follow directions and instructions, up to date phone numbers for ranger offices and permit offices is big plus. Now instead of cross referencing multiple websites for trail info I can use this book as my main guide and then follow up with precise google questions afterwards.

  • I love this book. I'm in my first season of backpacking and needed to know I wasn't getting in over my head in my first couple of trips. The "how to get there" and "trip description" sections offered with each destination are invaluable. They are incredibly accurate and give a great sense of what to expect on an outing.

  • One of the best backpacking books I have read. Having hiked most of California I was looking for a book to assist family members who were visiting from out of state who wanted to backpack. This was the book to give the details on terrain, difficulty, time expected, best time of year for specific trails. Excellent purchase.

  • Never realized how awesome this book was until I purchased other backpacking books. Refraining from continuous landscape praise, this book tells you what you need to know in the best format possible, a true backpacker's book. I actually read it just for fun some times. I've gone on multiple trips from the book and I really am flabbergasted at how much I freakin love it. Now if they'd just come out with another one containing all dog friendly areas, I'd be loosing my s*** with excitement.

  • After thumbing through this book I realized you'd need a phone-book sized book to adequately write a book about backpacking California. There's just too much in this beautiful State to get down in a couple hundred pages!

This book would be a great starting point for a someone planning a backpacking trip.

  • Great, but does not cover water access on trails, would be nice if the author included that.(i understand it varies, but still more info would be nice for newbies like me) but super helpful!!

  • Excellent book, lots of great trails and info for each one so you're not going in blind. So many hikes that aren't easily found online, love it!!
