She’s hiked more than 6,000 miles during the last three decades, which helped her to complete seven more books, including the one-and-only trail guide to the infamously remote and rugged Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness.

The updated and expanded sixth edition of this popular trail guide to the Sawtooth National Recreation Area describes 143 trails and cross-country routes. 16 of these are new. The book includes the three new wildernesses in the Boulder-White Cloud Mountains that were designated by Congress in 2015.
  • I purchased this book to update an older version. I'm disappointed that for such an expensive book, the proofing for accuracy was horribly done. I have found instances where the mileage in the text does not match the mileages shown in the accompanying map. I have even found contradicting distances for the same trail segment in two different maps. With thousands of trail miles and hundreds of nights out under my belt, I understand that book and map mileages are not always 100% accurate. But they should at least be consistent within the same book. The book is still a useful tool, just not what it could be. Sorry Margaret.

  • I'm amazed that there is not a better map for this area. Yes, this map has the trails, roads, and other info, but it is a cartographic embarrassment. No scale, north arrow, or legend on one side. No locational info such as a GPS grid, lat/long, etc. Nothing you would expect from a modern map.

  • Comprehensive trail descriptions but little description of destinations, campsites.

  • Both the maps and the verbal descriptions of the hikes are good. This guide was recommended by the leader of the group with which I hiked in the Sawtooths recently.

  • I am a professional Environmental Engineer and Earth Scientist who also happens to thoroughly enjoy God's natural wonders and especially the wild backcountry of Idaho. Margaret Fuller does an exemplary job of not only providing accurate and useful trail-specific information but she also sets herself apart from the "herd" of outdoor writers by providing a "James Michener" type of backdrop to each of her trail guides. In Trails of the Sawtooth and White Cloud Mountains, Margaret dedicates the first 44 pages to the geology of the area, fur trapping, endangered species, outfitters for pack animals such as llamas and goats, bark beetle damage and myriad other interesting subjects.

When I read about the author, I learn that Margaret received the Writer of the Year Award in 1982 and has maintained her excellence as an outdoor writer and activist ever since, as evidenced by subsequent honors that include a television spot on Outdoor Idaho (2003) and recent recognition for Environmental Activism from the Idaho Conservation League - a prominent and powerful supporter of all things natural in this great State!

It's highly refreshing to purchase a trail guide, or any book for that matter, whose author genuinely "walks his/her talk", as Margaret so obviously does. If you ever venture out into Idaho's pristine backcountry, there's a good chance that upon mentioning Margaret's name, you'll be met by nods of respect and approval regarding her many years of sincere and dedicated work in the Sawtooth and White Cloud Mountains.

One cannot place enough value upon having good equipment when out in the backcountry and having the best available information is, needless to say, every bit as important! I find Margaret's trail guides to be the "gold standard" in this regard and strongly recommend acquiring them before venturing into Idaho's backcountry.

  • I just got back from a 65 mile 7 night backpacking trip in the Sawtooth wilderness area. I used this book, along with a map, to plan my trip and found it an excellent guide. The map I used did not have mileage information so the mileage numbers provided were very helpful.
