American War is the first novel by Canadian-Egyptian journalist Omar El Akkad. It is set in a near-future United States of America, ravaged by climate change, in which a second Civil War has broken out over the use of fossil fuels.

American War is the first novel by Canadian-Egyptian journalist Omar El Akkad. The story is told by Benjamin Chestnut about his aunt, Sarat Chestnut, and is told through narrative chapters interspersed with fictional primary documents collected by the narrator.

‘How are we going to get there? Switzerland’s about fifty miles away. ‘Oh, I don’t know, Patachoun. There must be trains running to it. Once we’re there we could get across. I don’t suppose tracking down escaped English girls is going to be the highest priority for the German Army.

This is a timely book, defining for us the nature of international conflict in the foreseeable future. Very timely given the Trumps administrations current attempts to address China's unfair trade practices and theft of US intellectual property as well as Russia's interference in US elections.

Even the outbreak of war later that year did little to disturb her happy life there, until 1940 when Hitler launched an all-out assault on Western Europe. Trying to escape back to Britain, Rosie was only able to flee as far as Paris, where she was eventually rounded up as an 'enemy alien' and sent to a German-run prison camp in Eastern France.
