The shelf surrounding an island is known as an insular shelf. The continental margin, between the continental shelf and the abyssal plain, comprises a steep continental slope, surrounded by the flatter continental rise, in which sediment from the continent above cascades down the slope and accumulates as a pile of sediment at the base of the slope. ^ Pourret, Olivier; Tuduri, Johann (December 2017). Continental shelves as potential resource of rare earth elements".

Marine sediments are an important compartment for N cycling. Shelf sediments in particular are sites of active denitrification (Codispoti et a. 2001), and estuarine, coastal, and coral reef sediments can be important sites of nitrogen fixation (Burns et a. 2002; Capone, 1983; Capone et a. 1992).

High-resolution bathymetric mapping of the shelf edge revealed a topographically distinct semi-continuous 71 km-long relict barrier reef bank system. The purpose of this study was to characterize the pattern of mesophotic habitat development of the shelf edge and use this data to narrow the potential long-term and large-scale structuring forces of this mesophotic coral ecosystem. However, on the southeastern Puerto Rican shelf MCE the statistically significant relationship between mean benthic orbital velocity at a sampling site and coral cover may not reflect chronic inhibition due swell.
