Our intrepid anti-hero Artemis Fowl returns again in this second instalment in Eoin Colfer’s best selling series

Our intrepid anti-hero Artemis Fowl returns again in this second instalment in Eoin Colfer’s best selling series The Arctic Incident takes place a few months after the events of the first Artemis Fowl book, with Artemis having received a ransom letter asking for a large sum of money in exchange for his father. The criminal mastermind is busy trying to come up with a scheme to free his father without having to pay the ransom, but as his scheming continues it becomes obvious that he will need help from the fairies if he is going to rescue his father.

At the start of his second adventure, Artemis is at boarding school in Ireland when he receives an urgent video e-mail from Russia. In it is a plea from a man who has been kidnapped by the Russian Mafiya - a man Artemis had thought he would never see again: his beloved father. As Artemis rushes to his rescue, he is stopped by a familiar nemesis, Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon fairy police. But this time, instead of battling the fairies, he is going to have to join forces with them if he wants to save one of the few people in the world he loves.
  • The Arctic Incident in as impressive, if not better, than the first book, Artemis Fowl. The book is action packed and can be enjoyable for anyone of any age, even though it is intended for teens. The book was in great condition when I got it. The condition was as if I had personally gone to the book store and picked it off the shelf myself. Over all, don't worry about this book not being in great condition when you order it; it will be. Now time for the actual book review.
The book is a fantasy novel, obviously because of the fairies in it. Now, if you enjoyed the first Artemis Fowl book, it is more then likely you will enjoy this book. If you did not enjoy the first book, then you won't like this book. Also, if you haven't read the first book, do so before reading this one. It is only reasonable to read the series in order. I know that there are some series where you can read each installment individually without having to read the others, but the Artemis Fowl series isn't like that. Yes, you might be able to sort of understand the plot and concept, but many details are used in the first book that contribute to the second. So, read the first book, if you liked the first book, buy the second one!
    (No spoilers)
Now, it is time for the actual review of the content the book holds. The Arctic Incident is more action packed than the first. There are two main crucial plots going on in the story. One is a plot to overthrow the LEP, and the commander of the operation is unknown. The other is Artemis trying to rescue his father. The LEP and Artemis make a compromise to help each other with their missions. The book is written well, and the vocabulary in it would benefit anybody. The book is fast paced, but that doesn't mean it leaves out details. You will get a clear vision of the surroundings, and be able to keep anybody interested. Overall, I think this is a great book, and would recommend it to people I know. The score is a 10/10, and that is all!

  • I love this series, so my review is with prejudiced. It is the teen villain/hero combines with the fantasy world of faeries. Add espionage and viola! You the Artemis Fowl adventures.

  • Don't get me wrong; I thoroughly enjoyed the first Artemis Fowl book. Still, I can't help liking the second installment better. It's like the first in many ways; the action is as intense, the plot as involved, the characters as fascinating, and the wit as unrelenting. The biggest difference is in the reader's empathy for the title character. For once, Artemis isn't trying to steal anything. Unless you count snatching his kidnapped father from under the noses of the Russian Mafiya as stealing, that is. Artemis Senior has been missing for two years when his son receives the ransom message. Artemis II(now thirteen), fully aware of the danger to himself and to his father, sets out with Butler, his bodyguard, to outwit some of the most dangerous and powerful criminals in the world. Before Artemis and Butler get off the Fowl estate, however, they are detained and detoured by elfin Captain Holly Short of the Lower Elements Police. The fairies are having troubles of their own involving a goblin uprising, some illegal weapons, and several caches of contraband AA batteries. So much the fairy police know. What they don't know is much, much worse. When Artemis and Butler agree to help the LEP in exchange for some assistance on their own mission, they have no idea how big the stakes are or what kind of enemies they'll be making. Or for that matter, what kind of friends.

  • Eion Colfer has the ability to craft a story that twists and winds, keeping you guessing what will happen next. Great YA series is enjoyable for adults as well. The Artemis Fowl series is a fun mix of fantasy and sci-fi with plenty of action and humor.

  • Having eaten my way through the first book like a dwarf burrowing through loosely-packed earth, I found this one slightly slower going. My new favorite genius-millionaire-criminal mastermind is now a teenager and he's not as tough and full of brass as he was in book one.

Cut him some slack though, his mommy's back to normal, and ready to start trying to control his life, and he's just discovered that his dad is still alive, and being held for ransom by the Russian Mafiya in a nuclear submarine graveyard. Even geniuses have their limits.

Captain Holly Short isn't having a good time either. After Artemis successfully procured half of the Recon ransom fund in book one, she's been given a "time-out" doing stakeouts for smugglers for the Customs and Excise Department. It seems that someone is organizing the dim-witted goblins to do some good old fashioned gun running, and of course, our intrepid heroine lands herself in the middle of the melee.

Opal Koboi is a new character, a pixie with talents to rival the resident geek Foaly the Centaur, and has absolutely no scruples whatsoever.

Someone has been re-engineering laser guns to work with regular AA batteries, and Holly feels that Artemis is involved. Artemis would rather get along with the process of rescuing his father, but after an interrogation proves Holly incorrect, they team up as an unlikely pair of secret agents to solve both problems.

What follows is action galore, as the book accelerates to warp speed, and even Artemis is forced to be a hero, albeit a puny little one. Each of our favorite characters from book one takes center stage at one time or the other and even Mulch becomes a leading dwarf with a pivotal role.

The story ends with a crazy rescue plan that goes terribly wrong, until girl power again triumphs over rotten luck.

A wonderful follow on from the first book, and an encouraging preview to the third.
