Every Night They Dance is an outstanding collection of poems. Kissane is a poet for Everyman - skilful, perceptive and wise and this book is a treasure. Sue Polites, Studio, No 85, Summer 2001-2002. Indeed, Andy Kissane by the example of this work is one of the strongest younger poets writing in Australia today. The different contexts are limned with an artist’s and perhaps a scholar’s care for the telling, inventive or historically accurate detail, but the strength is in the constructed subjectivities of divergent characters, far-flung in time, space and memory.

Every Night They Dance by Andy Kissane Five Islands Press (2000). Just as there are two poetic sensibilities, Every Night They Dance is in a sense two books. Andy Kissane's second collection of poetry begins with the evocative lines: In my dreams I blow glass. My breath spirals easily up the rod, My lips are loose and supple as if I'm panning cool notes into the evening. This is an apt description of Kissane's work. The poems in Part 1 are dramatic monologues with Kissane slipping easily into a range of different voices and skins: Arthur Streeton, a suffragette, a Kanak, a colonial farm girl who saves the life of an Aboriginal man, various nineteenth century workers and others.

want last night every night
want last night every night. I could get used to getting fired 'Cause I keep on calling in sick If then instead, we're both in bed And you make me forget about it Could get used to never knowing What we're gonna call this thing And thinking your mistakes are small mistakes I fit 'em all under the carpet. That thing you did You should do it again
