Whipping the horses to go faster under dangerous conditions us not only senseless but abominably cruel. I am beyond astonished that Cartland thinks the English civilized when their racing to hounds means the destruction of foxes under the cruelest means.

Barbara Cartland (1901 - 2000) was a fascinating woman who led a long and productive (723 novels!) life. The Enchanted Waltz" is one of Cartland's so-so efforts, although we learned quite a bit about Klemens Wenzel von Metternich and his many love affairs. Her earliest publications were considered risqué and one of her plays ("Blood Money" 1926) was banned by the Lord Chamberlain's Office. Later in her writing career, she began specializing in virginal, unworldly heroines, including Wanda, the natural daughter of the Prince of Metternich although she doesn't realize that he's her father until she meets him and notes that they both have blue eyes.
