  • I obtained this book as a paperback in about 1972. This book was first published by Random House in 1960 as a hard bound book. A second edition of the book was published in 1971 in a paperback format. The second paperback edition had been "revised and expanded" to include new information bringing the history of the Soviet Communist Party up to the Brezhnev and Kosygin era.

Over my life since obtaining this book, I have moved to many different locations. This has required that I box up all my books. Sometimes it takes a while for me to un-box my books. However, I have always kept this book close at hand to be unpacked first in my new location. This is a book that has been a constant companion of mine no matter where I live. I have used this book as a reference book more often than any other book that I have ever owned.

Because of the heavy use of the book, and because it is a paperback it is quite worn. I have always preferred to have hard bound copies of the books in my library and I have long wanted to upgrade this book to a hard bound copy. However, the trouble is that the only hardbound copies of the book that, I could find were the 1960 first editions books, which would not include all the revisions and enlargements that are contained only in the paperback second edition. However, through Amazon.com I was able to find a find hardbound copy of the 1970 revised and enlarged edition of the book. Now I can use the hardbound book as my reference book and relegate the old paperback to permanent retirement on the shelves of my library.

    As a result of

  • As an undergraduate, My major was in Political Science and my minor in History. The area of largest area of concentration in my minor was the History of Russia and the Soviet Union. When I first bought this book in 1972, I had little awareness that the book would become one of the most utilized books in my library. Soon after obtaining the book, I read it straight through. However, the book has become much more useful to me over the years as a reference book. The Appendices in this "1971" newly revised and enlarged" version of the book is the reason why. The Appendices contain lists of dates of all the Party Congresses and Party Conferences, Diagrams of the organization of the Party Secretariat, lists of all the changes in the members and candidate members of the Politburo and Presidium and a great deal of information.

All this information gathered in one volume has led me to refer to this book many times over the years and required me to keep it close at hand. Accordingly, the book is currently with me in Arlington Va. and not in my main library in my primary house in Charleston, West Virginia. Because this 1971 edition of the book is in paperback, I have attempted to purchase a hard bound volume of the same book. However, I have found that the 1970 hardbound version of this book does not contain the Appendices of the "revised and enlarged" 1971 version of the book. Accordingly, while the 1970 hard bound version of this book remains in my main library in West Virginia it is the 1971 paper back version that continues to travel with me.
