what is the first goal in surveillance. establish a baseline. death -measure of disease severity -measure effectiveness of treatment over time -denominator represents the entire population at risk (those with and without the disease). disease occurrence cane be measured in. rates- how fast the disease is occurring in the population proportions- what fraction of the population is affected. a number of new cases of a disease that occur during a specific period of time -measure of events and risks.

There are clearly identied key points drawn from each section and throughout the text important or more complex concepts are highlighted in boxes. The book is well referenced with a substantial bibliography and it has an index although this is not entirely comprehensive. I run a public health masters course for students from a number of dierent disciplines and mainly from EU and other European countries. Eds. K. B. Crossley and G. L. Archer.
