  • What an overlooked book! This story begins sad and ends with a big lesson: all that is new is not the best. For parents of dog lovers, this book teaches the value of loving our old canine companions, lumps and bad breath and all. That is a lesson that translates to loving old people as well. My kids loved the book for its simple rhymes and simple drawings--some they could have drawn themselves. Nothing is better than an old devoted dog except perhaps an old book that is timeworn--complete with the water damage that resulted from a devastating fire that destroyed our home years ago when the kids were little. Our oldest dog just died and I got this old book out to revisit and bring some closure to the traumatic event. An irony: even though the book is old and wrinkled and stained, it is still one of the BEST.

  • This story, about the love of a woman for her dog and the true meaning of happiness, should not be missed! It tells the tale of a woman who trades her old dog, Buck, and continues to make better and better trades until she ends up with a mansion. What will her last and best trade be? The rhyming and brief text makes this book appropriate for children of all ages, but would be most meaningful for ages four through twelve. What a wonderful message it conveys!
