Even before her launch RMS Queen Mary earned a special place in history. Job number 534, as the new Cunard liner was known. Short but well-written. You can learn a lot from this book about the world's greatest ocean liner. One person found this helpful.

Moving away from the zoo, here I explore the Queen Mary, one of Britain's most famous and successful passenger liners, which entered the world in the glamourous 30s, transported troops in the Second World War, then was the passenger's favourite until the 60s, when transatlantic air travel became more popular. Retired in 1967, the ship now lies permanently docked in Long Beach, California, near Los Angeles, as a hotel and visitor attraction. Also, David Ellery, in his book RMS Queen Mary: The World's Favourite Liner relates: But, in truth, Cunard planned to call their new superliner 'Victoria' and politics didn't play a part in the last-minute switch to the name Mary. Sir Ashley Sparks, then Chairman of the Cunard Line in America was part of a small delegation that called on King George V to ask his permission to name No. 534 after Queen Victoria

  • The first time I ever encountered this book was on the Queen Mary 2 last summer on the way from Southampton to New York. It was in the library on deck 8. It was a good thing I took extensive photos of the pictures and even took movies of the text and pictures of the rooms on the original Queen Mary that now resides in Long Beach, California. When I came ashore I found that I couldn't get it through interlibrary loan. And online I would have to pay over $100.00 to buy it. It was clearly out of print. Yet it's the most detailed book ever written on what was inside that famous ocean liner of yesteryear. It gave me a vivid image of the Verandah Grill, one of the world's most famous and elegant restaurants at the time that was a trend-setter even among restaurants on land. It pioneered mood lighting that changed depending on what music was playing. I thought the children's playroom aft on the Verandah deck was very imaginative. There was a sun on the ceiling, a sliding board with animals carved into it, and caves underneath the slide.
P.S. Believe me, the Queen Mary 2 doesn't have anything like these rooms nowadays!

  • This is a must have for Queen Mary fans. The book covers the Queens career from inception to roughly 1994. This is an excellent book that covers extensively in both photos and text. A great collection of photos that appear in very few other books and quite well researched. Add this to your collection and you will not be sorry.

  • Great book by Ellery. Great graphics and beautiful book thanks amizon!
