After taking a geology class in his final year of school, he was inspired to pursue further study in this field. He subsequently entered the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, geology program where he received his doctorate in Glacial and Quaternary Geology under the guidance of one of America's preeminent glacial geologists, Dr. .
