In this regard Fifty Years A Planemaker And User is closer to Krenov and his approach to working wood than the other books mentioned previously – though it should be noted that Cecil has his own unique style.

In this regard Fifty Years A Planemaker And User is closer to Krenov and his approach to working wood than the other books mentioned previously – though it should be noted that Cecil has his own unique style. It wouldn’t be my first choice for a beginner planemaker but is, in my opinion, a very good book to have in the library nonetheless. There is a final book on the making of wooden planes that I should mention.

By the way - Cecil's plane design is a bit different from the classical methods illustrated by Whelan and others. However, I would have a hard time recommending this as a stand-alone book for a prospective planemaker. Instead of wooden wedges, he documents the use of a "toggle" (which looks like a lever cap to me) held in the wood by a modified wood screw. The iron is retracted or advanced in the traditional way - with a mallet - but with no wedge loosening to counter. Other authors cover the techniques and details of construction more thoroughly.

  • This is a very good book. It's well written and well illustrated. It's written in a rather personal style, it's a quite enjoyable reading by itself. Despite it's modest size (65 pages), this book contains a wealth of information for anyone willing to start making his own classic planes. Pay attention to the word "classic" - this books describes every single detail of building a traditional English wooden plane, unlike most other books that concentrate on so called "Krenov-style" planes. Also, the author describes some useful techniques and his shop-made jigs. His sharpening jig will save from buying large and expensive stones - I wish I'd knew this before buying a full set of 3"x8" DMT diamond plates!

  • I just got this book. I can't believe I paid $44 for this 66 page paperback. I'm sure the book will be good but it was way overpriced
