Craig Russell brilliantly uses the character of his tough, funny and hopeful man Lennox to give us the eyes and ears on a time and place.

Craig Russell brilliantly uses the character of his tough, funny and hopeful man Lennox to give us the eyes and ears on a time and place. This is storytelling at its very best! Michael Connelly. Published Date: 20 August 2011.

Russell Lee "Boobie" Clark (August 9, 1898 – December 24, 1968) was an American thief, bank robber and prison escapee. He is best known as the "good natured" member of the John Dillinger gang and participated in armed holdups with them in a three-month crime spree across the Midwestern United States from October 1933 until his capture in January 1934.

Craig Russell captures the feel of post war Glasgow brilliantly. As in the other fine mysteries in the Lennox series, Craig Russell deftly juggles several story lines in DEAD MEN AND BROKEN HEARTS. Lennox is accused of leaving a long line of both. The series has moved from criminal to more political thriller type plots, and at times this stretches credulity. There are also a couple of points in the book where Lennox, usually an observant and calculating type, misses the obvious, points that even a casual reader will surmise. Even with these minor criticisms, Russell delivers another fine book.

Two more bosses were to meet a literally sticky end courtesy of Murphy’s lead mallet. After that, his criminal organization spread like a stain across Glasgow’s West Side

Two more bosses were to meet a literally sticky end courtesy of Murphy’s lead mallet. After that, his criminal organization spread like a stain across Glasgow’s West Side. It grew to such an extent that the only obstacles to total domination of Glasgow were Willie Sneddon and Jonny Cohen, the two most successful black marketeers in immediate post-war Glasgow. Things soon got messy.

  • Brilliant 1950s noir thriller. Craig Russell has come up with a great character in fast talking and tough guy private detective called Lennox. Engaged by a big city crime boss, he cannot say no to an assignment unless he wants to lose his toes to a classic bad guy called Twinkeltoes BcBride. At the same time he has to work for another crime boss called Hammer Murphy who made his name by bashing peoples heads with a mallett. Big 50's cars, beautiful women and enough dangerous situations to land him in the clutches of the local police who's chief thinks Lennox is dirty because he works for the crime bosses. A great story that'll make you wish you could find Lennox's 'office' at the Horsehead Bar.

  • Craig Russell is attempting to do for Glasgow what Ian Rankin has done with Rebus. The "Chandleresque " style is deliberate and does not interfere with a very interesting and well crafted "who dunnit".Lennox is a "enquiry investigator" who finds himself involved with brutal police, deadly dames and sundry scoundrels whose reach may extend well beyond Glasgow. He paints a tale of a gritty large industrial city ruled in part by "Three Kings" whom we shall soon meet.Well done Mr.Russell.

  • I really enjoy Russell's work. A good series.

  • A good story from a new author for me. Will follow up with more work from Craig Russell. Two more words!!!

  • very good book

  • Excelente!!! No quieres dejar de leer. Tiene el poder de llevarte a la época de los años cincuenta. Lo recomiendo

  • THIS IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT BEING OLDER BUT IS STILL GOOD
IS A LITTLE NOSTALGIC AND KIND OF MAKES YOU WISH FOR THE PRECOMPUTER DAYS OF SOLVING CRIME

  • A cracking start to a potentially great series and a book which further compounds my disbelief that Russell is so underated in the crime genre as his Jan Fabel series is compelling reading! Anyway, I digress, `Lennox' does for 50`s Glasgow what Arnott did for 60`s London with the same assortment of dodgy gangsters, bent coppers and the wonderfully seedy underbelly of post war society. I think what sets this apart is not only the brilliant re-creation of the period but the strength of the characterisation and the blackly comic asides that permeate the book. I liked the fact that Lennox is Canadian and views everything that's thrown at him with the air of an outsider but by the same token how he has overcome this status to mix with some, by and large, unsavoury characters and who is man enough to take a beating! Teamed with a pacy plot this series is one to watch and I will be reading the follow-up 'The Long Glasgow Kiss' forthwith!
