The reading was a little dry but nothing too out of the ordinary for a finance class. The information was relatively straightforward and presented concisely.

We continue to organize the book around one basic theme-that security markets are nearly efficient, meaning that you should expect to find few obvious bargains in these markets.

The market leading undergraduate investments textbook, "Essentials of Investments, 8/e" by Bodie, Kane and Marcus, emphasizes asset allocation while presenting the practical applications of investment theory. The authors have eliminated unnecessary mathematical detail and concentrate on the intuition and insights that will be useful to practitioners throughout their careers as new ideas and challenges emerge from the financial marketplace. The eighth edition has been fully updated to reflect the recent financial crisis and includes a new chapter on Hedge Funds.
  • So, I've taken 2 classes using this textbook and run into the same problem with both classes and the textbook. (Note: the two teachers had very different approaches to using the text and so I waited to write the review to see if it changed my opinion). Regardless of how heavily the teacher relied on the text for the foundation of their lectures or how much work we did that mirrored the problems for the homework, ultimately when the homework problems came the examples in the text of each chapter weren't close to complicated enough for the problems in the homework at the end of the chapter. It was difficult because these teachers didn't utilize the online resource available. So, if there is a class you're about to take that uses this book, do everything you can to get the teacher to use online (the interactive site where they have problems you can work through) from the publisher....it will be the difference in success and frustration. Otherwise, get online and find somewhere to rent/purchase the solutions manual for the most recent edition---the problems aren't that different and it provides a base to work from when your teacher may not be accessible.

  • Well organized and easy to understand. Some of the explanations of the more complex topics felt like they got a bit repetitive without adding any additional clarity.

  • Tough read. The book dances around concepts in fine print. I would prefer the authors hotnyou with a theory or concept and then reiterate it in detail with examples. Chances are you don't have a choice anyway if this text is required. Just give yourself extra time since finding the essentials in a sea of words is like hooking a tuna on the open oceans. Cheers

  • This was a great text book! It's one of the few I kept after the class was over as a reference book as opposed to selling it. It covered the gamut of investing but broke things down in a digestible way that was extremely helpful in a super high speed class like the one I was in. Bonus: there's a workbook with test question that you can use to help prepare for quizzes. Some professors base the quizzes on the actual workbook.

  • Not a terrible read, some great information necessary for class and overall not difficult to understand. Easy to follow and helpful as a guide during class discussions

  • educational

  • I searched for this book on Amazon for the 8th edition, saw the link to kindle edition on the 8th edition and purchased it, I not only paid $4 dollars more than it was before but received an Ebook that isn't the edition advertised. The 8th edition had a crucial new part edited to reflect the financial collapse of 2008 and a new chapter on hedge funds.

    Amazon gone wrong!

  • Said it came with the access code according to the title. It did not and the access code costs an extra $130. Big rip off.
