Sir Neville Howse (1863-1930) was the first Australian to be awarded the VC (during the Boer War) and the only Australian medical officer to be so decorated. He saved thousands of lives at Gallipoli and was appointed Director of Medical Services for the AIF. He was knighted three times and had a distinguished parliamentary career.
