Her diary-like narrative supposedly fulfills another pledge: to present a "story of determination to survive" the trauma of giving up her son. Instead, the author mainly offers an expurgated version of her pregnancy. She looked very messed up. I had a lot of trouble reading this book.
The ending is the frustration, however. A while after the birth, Elizabeth Kane, an ardent supporter of surrogacy becomes a staunch anti-surrogate proponent, eventually asking for it to be banned. She talks about how she was manipulated and deceived and how it destroyed her relationship with her husband.

Elizabeth Dennistoun Wood Kane (12 May 1836 – 25 May 1909) was a British-American physician, writer, philanthropist, and women's rights activist. She was one of the first students to attend the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania. Her writing supported the part her husband, Thomas Kane, played in the lobbying efforts to prevent the Poland Bill from persecuting members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who were practicing plural marriage at the time.
