Russell, who speaks German and has a long-standing interest in post-war German history and society, has been a freelance writer for twelve years; Brother Grimm is his second novel. Plot: People are being killed and posed in Hamburg - posed like characters from Grimm's fairy tales. All we know about the culprit is that he is a big man. Unfortunately quite a few people meeting this description wander through the detective's life at this time - giving him all too many suspects. Fabel has to figure this out before it comes comes to an even worse end.

Firstly let me say that I really, really enjoyed this. Being a lover of mythology and history, anything along this line really gets me in. And, once again, the author has produced an great travelogue of some of the places to see in Hamburg. I really enjoy that sense of elsewhere.

The characters in this book are also beautifully crafted. The police carry the emotional and physical injuries of cases past, while the villains are psychotic and brutal.

In respect to grammar, typos and editting I can find no flaw.

Make no mistake, this is a dark and psychological book. And in what is a bit of a recurring theme in a couple of his novels the author questions how people create their own realities.

A big thumbs up here - buy it and read it.

I think I enjoyed this follow-up more even than the first book in the series, Blood Eagle. This may, in part, be due to my own love of fairy tales. Russell impeccably weaves the Grimm Brothers' fairy tales into this murder mystery without adding a hokey or downright silly tone to the novel at all. It's a riveting story and the plot certainly takes some unpredictable twists. Though there are plenty of clues thrown in to help reveal the killer's true identity, Russell manages to keep this truly hidden up until the very end. Russell's villain here, is also impressive - not only in size and scariness, but also in the way that Russell manages to give readers at least a bit of sympathy towards this monstrous character.

I am really looking forward to continuing on with the series. Russell clearly has a gift for plot, and his characters all come to life quite nicely. They have all developed over the course of these first two books in the series, and I am quite curious to see where they will go from here. Still, the focus of these books is most certainly their plots, and the originality and creativity that Russell offers up is fascinating and makes for a very enjoyable read.

An interesting premise, twists and turns a plenty and the familiar team of Russell's Hamburg novel. A solid read with the bonus of a dose of German culture. I've got the next one on my list to buy.

make sure you read blood eagle first Characters are quite good. Just as in blood eagle o glossed over the german words.

I thought that Mr. Russels first novel "Blood Eagle" was not only very well written, fleshing out nicely the characters, giving them faces and thoughts and all, but also stuctured in a way that more reflected reality than you would normally expect from a whodunnit novel.

His second book, "Brother Grimm" is even better. It follows the same team of Hamburg murder detectives as "Blood Eagle", Jan Fabel and his murder commission officers. Once again the writing is spot on, captivating, and yet somehow manages to give this police thriller another dimension. A dimension of litterature really (in lack of better words anyway). The author does seem to be particularly fond of the words "azure blue", which he uses two times on the opening page and more throughout the novel.

The story and the plot itself, is very well made up. We're kept guessing till the very end who the grim murderer is, and along the way we're led through many a wild goose chase, but it dosen't subtract or lessen the pace or 'feel' one bit, it actually adds to it.

A very good thing about this novel is, that you can reed as a stand alone adventure without having read the first story about the Hamburg murder commission team. Of course having read the first novel will only add to the experience, but it is not a must.

To reiterate: well written, well thought out, well plotted, very recommendable.

This is the second in Russell's sequence of German set police procedurals.
As in the first,we are presented with a serial killer with an agenda and the agenda is to do with Grimm's fairy tales.

(As an aside because of this book I did get a copy of the original,unedited or unrevised Grimm's tales with the gore intact and fairy tales will never be quite the same again!)
We are given more insight into Fabel's (our hero) team and Fabel himself which is something Russell does really well,for me it adds and never detracts.
Once again I end up referring to google to check the many literary and architectural references that are made in the text...again it adds to the story for me. (It isn't necessary to do as the story is just fine without those details)

So why the 4 stars and not 5, well, I would say that it's because the story is so good that the catching of the bad guy (or guys,no spoilers) comes as a bit of a let down. Perhaps Russell had had enough but the actual denouement left me feeling that there should have been more to it.
However...if you haven't read it then do...in fact read all his books they really are worth the read.

By the way there is one very short scene which is,for me,the most skin crawling thing I have ever seen written.
Not gory,not violent,no blood, no action, it's just words......and if you read it you may spot it. Enjoy!

This marvelous, second entry in this exceptional series, might be even better than the first one. That doesn't happen too often. Mr. Russell's crime novels are the perfect indictment of the times we live in. In a desperate chase for money and goods, we forgot to live and connect. Thus the paradox of richness deeply eaten by poverty of soul. We are still eagerly awaiting for the brave thinker, to show us the way. Oh boy, are we lost?
