Hardcover, Rhyming Stories. This was my brothers book. The very first Ladybird book ever was produced by a jobbing printer called Wills & Hepworth during the First World War. The company, based in Loughborough, Leicestershire, began to publish 'pure and healthy literature' for children, registering the Ladybird logo in 1915. Despite the company's claims, however, those books would no longer be politically correct. In the ABC Picture Book, for example, A stood for armoured train!.

First Day of the Holidays (Rhyming Stories). I think any children's story is all the better in ryhme, and I have begun collecting some of the ladybird old 401 series because my boys enjoy them so much and ryhming stories- or atleast half decent ones- are very hard to come by. (For anyone also with an appreciation for these things, we did come across a beautiful poem-style version of The Emperor's New Clothes the other day, which is very 'modern', by Marcus Sedgwick and wonderfully illustrated by Alison Ja. Over all, for the price (I paid a penny plus postage here) I would thoroughly recommend Bunnikin's Picnic.

It was the bloodiest battle of the war, and as many of the soldiers lacked basic cold gear, it was also one of the most physically testing. It’s definitely not a light read. The story was given out for free to over 2 million children who visited the stores during Christmas time of 1939.
