It was never known if she had a physical relationship with a male in her life.

It was never known if she had a physical relationship with a male in her life. All of her sexual relationships were with women like artist, Romaine Brooks, writer Rene Vivian, Eva Palmer, and others. She was a striking woman with blonde hair and blue eyes born of privilege and social standing in the United States. Her father had wished that she would be married to a man but that never happened and it was never going too. Natalie lived in Paris, France where.

Wickes managed to make Natalie Barney boring. Skip this, and go to 'Wild Heart: A Life: Natalie Clifford Barney and the Decadence of Literary Paris' by Suzanne Rodriquez.

I really appreciated the heavy use of primary sources (including interviews!) which led to a better understanding of how those around Barney perceived her and her literary salon. I also made note of how respectful the author was in regards to the more sensitive aspects of Barney's personal life (. her liaisons and relationships) and her feminist views. Natalie Barney came to Paris from America in 1894, a young woman possessed of beauty, brilliance, wealth. She was also the most notorious lesbian of her age. She attracted the admiration of leading men of letters of the day, commanded a salon that became a center of cultural life, and herself made life and conversation a delightful form of art. But the heart of Natalie Barney's life centered in a different area.

The Life and Loves of Natalie Barney, revd by C David Heymann. Certainly it was the only place on the Continent where young, unsung writers and artists could rub shoulders with the European elite. But the real legend of Natalie Barney was not this. Liberated even by Parisian standards, she made no secret of her marked sexual preference for women, churning out confessional Sapphic verse long before the mode became fashionable.
