As a result, Impressionist works depicting the prostitute often became the subject of scandal, and particularly venomous criticism.

Elizabeth Gowdy graduated from Monmouth College and studied art at Cooper Union in New York City, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Cowles Art School in Boston under such masters as William M. Chase and H. Siddons Mowbray. After her marriage to Daniel B. Baker, she settled in New York City. The couple traveled extensively including many visits to her mother in Santa Ana, California. Primarily a portraitist, she also painted seascapes and landscapes. She died in New York City on October 11, 1927 and was buried in Santa Ana.
