Giuliana Tedeschi was a young woman from Turin's Jewish intellectual community when she was deported to Birkenau in April 1944. How she summoned all her resources to remain human and alive is the subject of this remarkable story, which records not so much the horror around her as the struggle within-the struggle with her spiritual resources

WHAT is a city? These two books, though different in style and approach, come to similar conclusions. The city as a metropolitan core containing jobs and shops, surrounded by residential neighbourhoods to which it is connected by roads and rail, the whole eventually giving way neatly to countryside, is no longer an accurate description of how our urban areas work. And cities are likely to diverge even more from this in future. The authors seem most excited by the aerotropolises now rising in places like China, where villages are being forcibly relocated to make way for runways and environmental objections are drowned out by the roar of bulldozers.

  • This is the story of Giuliana Tedeschi who was sent to Auschwitz along with her husband and mother-in-law in April 1944. She alone survived of the three of them. I liked the rhythm of this book and found it easy to read. The description of her fellow prisoners and all the suffering was very moving. I did, however, find it a bit disconcerting that there were lots of phrases in the book in German, French, and Italian none of which I speak which made it a challenge to figure out what was going on. That is why I gave the book four stars. Overall though, it was a good book. This is also the only book I have ever read written by an Italian survivor of the war. A very good read.

  • The story is captivating, the writing is not. The elegance and poetry of the author's use of language is memorable...especially given the subject, but unless one is familiar with many languages, the constant interjection of foreign speech makes it difficult for monolinguals to follow. I am a language teacher and speak several languages but most of the people in our reader's group could not, and found it frustrating. Thankfully, the author does not give much detail to the horrors lived, but rather focuses on the daily routine, the cultural differences among the prisoners and the personal friendships that allowed her to survive.

  • This isn't an easy book to read, but it is authentic. A narrative by a survivor. There were far, far too few who survived, many of those few badly damaged for life. This fits within the "Never Again!" genre of "Night" by Elie Wiesel. Should be permanently in classrooms throughout the world.
