  • I wanted a book of list. As in, a book with a bunch of cool bible list like "Suicides of the bible", "Women of the bible", "times Jesus is mentioned" or something.

    Instead of that, I got a book filled with numbers and words.

    I was 17 at the time, so it didn't really strike and interest with me.

    It could be a great book, but make sure that you know exactly what you're getting!

  • This is the kind of a book that hovers between a handy desk reference and a trivia treasure trove. Certainly if you are curious about any aspect of the Bible, you can find some factual information and some little known tidbits to help you, within its covers. Wondering about the Hammurabi Dynasty of Babylon or the Kings of Medo-Persia? You are in luck; they are listed here complete with names and dates. If you want to know the difference between the Midrash and the Zugoth, you can see a succinct comparison, here. Having a hard time pinpointing the precise date of the death of Nicomedes III of Bithynia? Or the year when Antony met Cleopatra? Again, for the answer, you need look no further than Baker's Handbook of Bible Lists.

    Admittedly, there may be more information in this book than you need in one sitting. Even so, things like the New Testament chronology, which starts on page 101, keep the events in their proper order. And the section on the various rulers named Herod is a help amid the confusing profusion (or is it profuse confusion?) of kings who bore that name.
