A rousing, rollicking guide to the great war that shaped America-and to the spirit of the Old .

A rousing, rollicking guide to the great war that shaped America-and to the spirit of the Old South that we need so much today. The politically correct history that dominates our schools and universities insists that Jefferson Davis was another Hitler, Robert E. Lee was the equivalent of Rommel, and the Confederate States of America was our own little version of the Third Reich-a blot on American history. This book is a joyful, myth-busting, rebel yell that shatters today's Leftist and demeaning stereotypes about the South and the Civil War-and shows why, in the words of G. K. Chesterton, "America and the whole world is crying out for the spirit of the Old South.

text devoted to the Civil War were very inadequate for such a pivotal series of events. Unfortunately, except for a few notable movies and the excellent Ken Burns series on CBS, most of us never have a chance to learn more about the war. Those who have tried, have found scholarly volumes, hundreds of pages long with. a very tiny font and vary little interest. Fortunately, Axelrod’s book corrects this. This book is very readable, it contains numerous pictures, maps and sidebars that help the reader learn more about the Civil War and to appreciate the positions of both sides of the conflict.

  • Overall, a very well-written book.

I enjoyed the author's writing style. Even among the Idiot's and Dummies range of books, this book is especially pleasant and easy to read.

This book describes the American Civil War in summarised form, which is to be expected of a one volume book. I especially liked the background and context of the history, for example, the causes of the war; the weaker economic position of the South (and its dependence on overseas imports because manufactured goods weren't available from the North); political pressures on Lincoln not to alienate the Northern states who still practiced slavery and the neutral ("border") states; the Reconstruction; and the poorer economic status of the South until discrimination against African Americans was removed.

The only complaint I have is the maps are very hard to read on the Kindle. Details are very fuzzy.

I will enjoy re-readiing this book in the future.

  • What a great writer! Very clear, concise and catches all the important parts. Fast read, easy reading for students, but not stupid or childish.

  • I wanted a brief generalization of the civil war battles. I'd say that is what I got with this book in Kindle form. It was very readable and if the maps were easier to see on the Kindle reader I would give it 5 stars. I found the material very interesting.

  • This book is detailed enough without boring the reader with a lot of unnecessary facts.

Why does Amazon need so many words for a review? I like the book.

  • Excellent, well researched book. Very readable and enjoyable.

  • Very good!

  • It has all you'd need to know about the American Civil War. I love brushing up on our nations past. Great for a bathroom reader.

  • Really fun and interesting facts. Hard to put down.
