By the 19th century, the Inupiat of northwest Alaska lived in at least ten highly territorial yet inter-dependent 'nations' that were further organized into compound or corporate groups (Burch, 1998Burch,, 2005Burch,, 2006 Ray, 1992). Conflict and violence were common, often arising over competition for resources; however, cooperation was also a central aspect of past lifeways in the Arctic. Photographer Vlad Sokhin is working in Alaska, where he documents the effects of global warming. Bird In Flight publishes his diary once a week. Below is Vlad’s report from Kivalina - an island settlement that will soon be wiped off the face of the Earth. I arrived in Kivalina early in the morning on a small plane operated by Bering Air, a small airline from the northern part of Alaska. An eight-seat aircraft, where I was the only passenger, brought me from Kotzebue to this small settlement in 40 minutes
