Thomas Bernhard : the dentist’s drill of modern literature.

Thomas Bernhard : the dentist’s drill of modern literature. When you are having such an entirely miserable, entirely lonely, entirely teeth-grinding time reading a novel, when groans and hisses and yelps issue involuntarily from you as you turn the page, you know you are in the presence of a master and that this is great literature. There is nobody I have ever read who speaks to me more clearly and like-minded than Thomas Bernhard does. From the very first sentence Bernhard had me hooked on the book.

So, last night I was in one bookstore in Rijeka, Croatia, where a translation of Bernhard's last work was presented. Bernhard visited Yugoslavia few times to treat his illness, but also to write (even on newspapers as you see). On translating his work, however, Sead Muhamedagić who translated this one, said that it's like fighting with a snake: you chop off one head just to find that three more arise.

Bernhard's body of work has been called "the most significant literary achievement since World War I. He is widely considered to be one of the most important German-speaking authors of the postwar era. Thomas Bernhard was born in 1931 in Heerlen in the Netherlands, where his unmarried mother Herta Bernhard worked as a maid.

Certain books-few-assert literary importance instantly, profoundly. This is one of those-a book of mysterious dark beauty.
