I love the Beatlesque young men pictured on the Human Voice page, and on the music cover on the upright piano illustrations, influenced no doubt by the times in which this was published: 1966

This first comprehensive history of musical instruments, this book ranges from prehistoric times to the 20th century. It traverses five continents and every stage of evolution, from primitive rattles and bull-roarers to the electric organ. He traces the evolution of folk and ritual instruments to tools of entertainment and art, the rise of a professional class of singers and musicians, and the musical revolution that flowered during the Renaissance.

Music is a form of art, which derives from the Greek word meaning "art of the Muses. Music has been performed since the dawn of human time with instruments and through vocal song. In ancient Greece, the Muses were the goddesses who inspired the arts, such as literature, music, and poetry. While it is not certain how or when the first musical instrument was invented, most historians point to early flutes made from animal bones that are at least 37,000 years old. The oldest known written song dates back 4,000 years and was written in ancient cuneiform.

Hardback, ex-library, with usual stamps and markings, in fair all round condition suitable as a reading copy.
  • This book (purchased from Amazon) is invaluable for parents who wish to give their children some background knowledge of music. The illustrations are colourful and clear and the role of the instrumental "families is well explained. Teachers who wish to give their pupils more insight into the world of music than mere practice of scales, arpeggios and exercises will find it most useful.

  • Now out of print. I was pleased to be able to find a few more copies for my school Music Dept.
