Amichai is considered, both in Israel and internationally, as Israel's greatest modern poet, and one of the leading poets worldwide. He also wrote two novels and several short stories. He was one of the first to write in colloquial Hebrew. He was awarded the 1957 Shlonsky Prize, the 1969 Brenner Prize, 1976 Bialik Prize, and 1982 Israel Prize

Following the war, Amichai attended Hebrew University, studying Biblical texts and Hebrew literature, and then taught in secondary schools. Amichai's first volume of poetry, Achshav Uve-Yamim HaAharim ( Now and in Other Days ) was published in 1955 and aroused serious interest in readers and critics alike.
