Busby Berkeley (born Berkeley William Enos; November 29, 1895 – March 14, 1976) was an American film director and musical choreographer. Berkeley devised elaborate musical production numbers that often involved complex geometric patterns. Berkeley's works used large numbers of showgirls and props as fantasy elements in kaleidoscopic on-screen performances.

Book by Thomas, Tony
  • This is a great book! Mostly black and white photos with a synopsis and comments on the films credited in one way or another to Buzz. It's the picture book companion to the excellent biography,"Buzz", by Jeffrey Spivak . They are great to read at the same time, especially if you can find some of the movies described in each. Buzz was the best! Even Ken Russell's "The Boyfriend" in the early '70s salutes (and does it very well) Buzz's techniques, actually duplicating a couple short scenes perfectly.

  • I purchased a used copy this book as i had lost the original one I had to a research project. It's author, Tony Thomas, spent time with Busby Berkeley and his wife, Etta, who supplied priceless photos and remembrances of his life in "The Man Behind the Spectacle." Mr. Berkeley's films are then individually addressed to give a rare look at his talent and process to make the camera itself dance. The photos themselves are a treasure trove, many not published elsewhere. Film archivists continue to look at Berkeley's films and career as they are major stepping stones to more recent filmmakers such as Baz Lurhmann and will continue to influence the way movement is captured by the camera. I am so happy to have this book back in my collection.

  • A very good overall book on busbey's life and work

  • great book on dancing

  • Was a good gift

  • I recently watched a Berkeley DVD (The Busby Berkeley Disc, Warner Home Video / Turner Entertainment) with twenty-one musical numbers from the films he created with those amazing dancing routines. At 163 minutes it beats having to sit through the original movies, now with very dated plotting and dialogue.

This title, published in 1973, is the perfect complement to the DVD. Essentially a book of 250 photos, movie stills and other related images, the first twenty-two pages has an illustrated essay of Berkeley's life. All his films, from 1930 to 1962, are included with production details, cast list and a description of the film, this I found particularly useful when watching the DVD and I wanted to know more about one of those amazing dance sequences and how he shot it.

    * Incidentally Rhino Movie Music label issued, in 1995, a two disc CD set of the original tracks from the movies, it includes a forty-four page illustrated book based on the book above.

  • The Busby Berkeley book was first published in the 1970's and besides for a single reprint has been out of print since. The book was written by English author Tony Thomas and Berkeley who was in retirement at the time had a limited role in its development. The book lists all of Berkley's films in chronological order with a couple of pages devoted to each film. Sadly many of these films which were made in the 1930's now appear to be all but lost. However as well as recently releasing the busby Berkeley collection on DVD Warner's has recently gone back into the archives and released several other Berkeley films over the last year including Wonder Bar, In Caliente, fashions of 1934 with Bette Davis and garden of the moon all of which are written about in the book. The most valuable thing about this publication is the fact that it contains about 300 stills and on set photos from Berkley's films which are not available anywhere else.
